POSE SERIOUS THREAT [5 records]

Record 1 2020-08-19

English

Subject field(s)
  • Water Pollution
  • Crude Oil and Petroleum Products
CONT

Marine oil pollution and the continuing encroachment on marine habitats from the oil and marine transport industries pose a serious threat for the marine natural resources of Newfoundland and Labrador. The effects of oil pollution on highly visible marine wildlife such as seabirds... have more recently been the subject of intense study. However, studies of the impacts of marine oil pollution on the commercial fisheries resources of Newfoundland and Labrador have not been as rigorously pursued.

Subject field(s)
  • Meteorological Forecasting, Data Measurement and Analysis
DEF

A bulletin issued by [local forecast] offices to alert the public to expected formation of thin ice on plants, trees, etc., when temperatures are expected to drop to between 30°F and 40°F. Since air temperature sensors are located 5 feet above ground level, frost will often occur when air temperature sensors indicate about 36°F. A bulletin may be issued indicating "Scattered Frost" or "Frost in low lying areas".

OBS

Frost describes the formation of thin ice crystals on the ground or other surfaces in the form of scales, needles, feathers, or fans. Frost develops under conditions similar to dew, except the temperatures of the Earth’s surface and earthbound objects falls below 32°F. As with the term "freeze," this condition is primarily significant during the growing season. If a frost period is sufficiently severe to end the growing season or delay its beginning, it is commonly referred to as a "killing frost." Because frost is primarily an event that occurs as the result of radiational cooling, it can occur with standard observing level temperature (at 5 feet above ground) in the mid to upper 30’s.

OBS

In consulted sources, "frost warning" and "frost advisory" are defined in the same manner. However, Environment Canada differentiates a "warning" from an "advisory" :"A weather advisory is issued when forecast conditions are expected to cause general inconvenience or concern, and do not pose a serious enough threat to issue a weather warning. An advisory will often precede a warning. "

DEF

DEF

Meteorological message issued when actual or expected weather conditions do not constitute a hazard but are of a nature that may cause general inconvenience or concern.

OBS

An advisory will often precede a warning.

OBS

[Meteorological message] issued by Environment Canada about actual or expected weather conditions which may cause general inconvenience or concern, but do not pose a serious enough threat to justify a weather warning.

OBS

[In Canada], in most cases, the special weather statement has now replaced the weather advisory. Weather advisories are now issued only for Humidex, heat and air quality.

OBS

The National Weather Service (NWS) is the official source [in the United States] of watches, warnings and advisories for hazardous weather. [Following is an explanation of] terms used by the NWS ... An ADVISORY is issued for weather that is expected to be an inconvenience and a disruption to one’s normal routine. It is not expected to be life-threatening. For example, advisories are issued for 1 to 3 inches of snow, dense fog, minor street flooding, etc. The issuance time frame is similar to that of a warning.

OBS

weather advisory: term standardized by the Translation Bureau and the Office of Critical Infrastructure Protection and Emergency Preparedness (OCIPEP).

DEF
