A propeller the blades of which have been rotated so that the leading and trailing edges are nearly parallel with the aircraft flight path to stop or minimize drag and engine rotation. 2, record 3, English, - feathered%20propeller
Record number: 3, Textual support number: 1 CONT
The term "feathering" refers to the operation of rotating the blades of a propeller to an edge-to-the-wing position for the purpose of stopping the rotation of the propeller whose blades are thus feathered and to reduce drag. Therefore, a feathered blade is in an approximate in-line-of-flight position, streamlined with the line of flight. Some, but not all, propellers can be feathered. Feathering is necessary when an engine fails or when it is desirable to shut off an engine in flight. The pressure of the air on the face and back of the feathered blade is equal, and the propeller will stop rotating. If it is not feathered when its engine stops driving it, the propeller will "windmill" and cause drag. Another advantage of being able to feather a propeller is that a feathered propeller creates less resistance(drag) and disturbance to the flow of air over the wings and tail of the airplane. 3, record 3, English, - feathered%20propeller

3, record 3, French, - h%C3%A9lice%20en%20drapeau

Scanning transmission electron microscopy(STEM) combines the principles of transmission electron microscopy and scanning electron microscopy and can be performed on either type of instrument. Like TEM [transmission electron microscopy], STEM requires very thin samples and looks primarily at beam electrons transmitted by the sample. One of its principal advantages over TEM is in enabling the use of other signals that cannot be spatially correlated in TEM, including secondary electrons, scattered beam electrons, characteristic X-rays, and electron energy loss. Like SEM [scanning electron microscopy], the STEM technique scans a very finely focused beam of electrons across the sample in a raster pattern. Interactions between the beam electrons and sample atoms generate a serial signal stream, which is correlated with beam position to build a virtual image in which the signal level at any location in the sample is represented by the gray level at the corresponding location in the image. Its primary advantage over conventional SEM imaging is the improvement in spatial resolution. 3, record 7, English, - scanning%20transmission%20electron%20microscopy

1, record 11, French, - Strat%C3%A9gie%20commerciale%20mondiale

Circuit of electric field measurements of thunderclouds.... The electric field mill is a device based on electrostatic induction. It consists of one or two electrodes which either rotate in an electrostatic field or become periodically exposed to a field by rotating vanes. Fig. 46 illustrates a cylindrical field mill which consists of two cylinder halves that are electrically insulated from each other. An electric motor rotates the two halves in the electric field to be measured so that they become alternately exposed to both the positive and negative direction of the field. The result is that an alternating(ac) signal is generated across the two halves which can be easily amplified.... Although not commonly used, the cylindrical field mill has the advantage that when mounted in a fixed position it can also indicate the direction of the field. This is accomplished by measuring the phase shift of the ac signal relative to the orientation of electric fields need to be measured. 2, record 14, English, - cylindrical%20field%20mill

The device normally used to measure atmospheric electric fields is a type of sensor called an electric field mill. It can be used on the ground to gain information about the field aloft, or it can be flown on an airplane or balloon. Thirty-one ground-based field mills at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station and the Kennedy Space Center are used to measure the electric field just above the surface of Earth, in the lowest meter of the atmosphere, and determine if it meets the safety levels specified in the Lightning Launch Commit Criteria. The window is constructed of three panes of fused silica and a fourth protective kick pane made of glass laminate. A scratch or "kick" pane that protects the primary pressure pane from being damaged if the crew or equipment make contact with the window [and] provides a UV-IR coating to protect the crew members. INBOARD-The kick pane is removed during window research operations to take advantage of the full spectrum of radiation that passes through the fused silica panes. When not in use, the window is protected by the kick pane on the inside, and by an external cover on the outside. Another process somewhat related to extrusion blow molding is the extrusion/molded neck process. Still used today by Owens-Illinois, this is a proprietary process that traces its roots to glass-blowing technology. It is unique in that the bottle neck finish is injection molded and the bottle body is extrusion blow-molded. In this process, the two halves of a neck finish cavity or neckring are mounted to an actuating head assembly, which intermeshes with the two halves of the blow-mold cavity. The process cycle begins with the main body mold cavity open and the neckring cavity closed. The actuating head assembly moves downward to contact the extrusion die head. When it is in position, extrusion pressure fills the neck section with plastic melt. After it is held for one to two seconds, the head assembly moves upward while, simultaneously, the parison is extruded. When the head assembly reaches the top of its stroke, the blow-mold cavity closes on the parison. The remaining steps of parison pinch-off, blowing, and part removal all follow conventional techniques. Although the production cycle is somewhat slow, the process offers the quality advantage of an accurately molded neck and the process advantage of a parison held at both ends. 1, record 18, English, - extrusion%20molded%20neck%20blow%2Dmolding%20process
