English

Subject field(s)
  • Physics
  • Analytical Chemistry
CONT

Silver-ion chromatography is a technique that utilizes the property of silver ions to form reversible polar complexes with double bonds in organic molecules such as unsaturated lipids. This technique enables the separation of unsaturated species according to the number, geometric configuration, and position of the double bond.

OBS

DEF

Enzyme that catalyzes the hydrolysis of a [beta]-(1,4)-glycosidic bond between the N-acetylmuramic acid and N-acetylglucosamine residues of the mucopeptide found in the cell walls of many bacteria. This action weakens the covalent structure of the wall and reduces its resistance to osmotic swelling, as a result of which the cells burst.

CONT

By recombinant DNA techniques, a disulfide bond was introduced at a specific site in T4 lysozyme, a disulfide-free enzyme. This derivative retained full enzymatic activity and was more stable toward thermal inactivation than the wild-type protein. The derivative, T4 lysozyme(Ile3-> Cys), was prepared by substituting a Cys codon for an Ile codon at position 3 in the cloned lysozyme gene by means of oligonucleotide-dependent, site-directed mutagenesis.

CONT

The well-known human protein lysozyme, present in human tears is also present in the urine of pregnant women and may block HIV virus.

OBS

Also called muramidase or mucopeptide glycohydrolase.

Key term(s)
  • mucopeptide glycohydrolase

Domaine(s)

DEF

CONT

A laddered portfolio is comprised of several bonds, each with a successively longer term to maturity. For instance, in a 10-year laddered portfolio, [the investor] might purchase bonds that mature in one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine and 10 years. When the first bond matures at the end of year one, [the investor] would reinvest in a bond that matures in ten years – and continue doing this every year. Each position in the portfolio is usually the same size as the next, with intervals between maturity dates roughly equal.

CONT

As the name suggests, a laddered bond portfolio is made up of several fixed income holdings, ... Bonds close to maturity are reinvested back out at the long end (i.e. at the top of the "ladder") which will result in continuous rolling of the portfolio.

CONT

When one sells a call option without owning the underlying stock or any equivalent security(convertible stock or bond or another call option), he is considered to have written an uncovered call option. This strategy has limited profit potential and theoretically unlimited loss.... since there is no actual cash investment required to write a naked call-the position can be financed with collateral loan value of marginable securities-the strategy can be operated as an adjunct to many other investment strategies.

bond. To dispose in building, as the materials of a wall, so as to secure solidity.

OBS

bond. The union or tie of the several stones or bricks forming a wall. The bricks may be arranged for this purpose in several different ways, as in English or block bond, where one course consists of bricks with their ends toward the face of the wall, called headers, and the next course of bricks with their lengths parallel to the face of the wall, called stretchers; Flemish bond, where each course consists of headers and stretchers alternately, so laid as always to break joints; Cross bond, which differs from the English by the change of the second stretcher line so that its joints come in the middle of the first, and the same position of stretchers comes back every fifth line; Combined cross and English bond, where the inner part of the wall is laid in the one method, the outer in the other.

These clauses are called protective provisions, trust deed restrictions, or covenants by the company. They appear in a legal instrument variously called a trust deed or deed or trust and mortgage in the case of a mortgage bond secured by assets, or a trust indenture in the case of a corporate debenture. They are essentially safeguards placed in the contract to guard against any weakening in the position of the security holder.

Normally an assessment of bond quality allows for both good and bad times by providing the margin of safety judged necessary for a company to weather difficult economic conditions and fulfil its debt obligations. A company, that is conservatively financed and in a strong financial position, will likely encounter no problems.

CONT
