Unlike the STM, the AFM [Atomic Force Microscope] can scan nonconducting samples. It can do this because it uses optical technology, direct contact, and a laser, to sense the position of the tip in relation to the sample. The tip is very sharp and protrudes from a small flexible cantilever. The laser reflects off the top side of the tip and is directed to a split photodiode. The height of the surface of the sample deflects the cantilever causing the position of the laser on the photodiode to change. If we continue walking along the direction that T & P increased in these rocks during metamorphism, we would eventually come to another place where in the pelitic rocks the mineral assemblage changes. This time the change is from Kyanite + Quartz to Sillimanite + Quartz. Again, we can draw a line on the map that indicates this change in mineral assemblage, this time calling it the Sillimanite Isograd. Just like before, this represents the point on the phase diagram, above, where the geothermal gradient intersected the boundary for the reaction... Because the sandstone and the limestone do not contain Kyanite, the isograd does not appear in these rocks, but we can still extrapolate its position across the map or outcrop.

The chief cause of precession, causing the card to creep or drift, is bearing friction. As you probably know, the GHRS automatically corrects observations for the effects of the motion of the HST spacecraft. This correction is done in real time as an exposure is in progress. Every minute a new shift is calculated and if necessary a change in the deflection of the spectrum is made. These onboard corrections cannot be removed after the fact except as an overall shift of the spectrum, but the net doppler compensation applied is stored in the data header. As in the case of a heliocentric correction to radial velocity, the doppler compensation is calculated from the position of the object relative to the vector of motion of the spacecraft.

Probably an automatic Doppler effect compensation is used: when approaching the object, the questioning signal becomes shorter and the impulse sequence faster. The sound volume can also be varied in order to detect more distant objects or sound-absorbing objects.
