CONT

The motion of free-floating space robots is characterized by non-holonomic constraints, i.e., non-integrable rate constraint equations. These constraints originate from the principles of conservation of angular momentum. It is well known that these rate constraints can also be written to form an input-affine drift-less control system. Trajectory planning of these systems is extremely challenging and computation intensive since the motion must satisfy differential constraints. Under certain conditions, these drift-less control systems can be shown to be differentially flat.

CONT

To date, most of the research on the control of space robots has centered on "free-floating" robots. Free-floating robots are defined as space robots where the satellite base position and orientation are unactuated. Without base actuation, no external forces or torques act upon the system when the end-effector is not in contact with the work environment. The linear and angular momenta of the system are conserved, so the spacecraft base moves in reaction to commanded arm motion.

The aim of the attitude control system is to always keep the satellite in the correct position or "attitude, "with the antennas pointing toward the Earth, and the solar panel array pointing toward the Sun... CONT

In 2008, Congress required railroads install positive train control(PTC) on mainlines that transport any poisonous-inhalation-hazardous(PIH) materials and where regularly scheduled intercity passenger or commuter rail services are provided. The unloading process commences when cars are spotted on tracks leading to a terminal' s trackshed.... The car is spotted over the unload position in the trackshed by a winch(cable carhaul), or by a shunt engine. It is then unloaded. The grain flows into the unloading pit where it remains until communication is received from the scale floor to indicate that the appropriate garner is empty. Communication between trackshed and scale floor can be carried out in a number of ways including a simple voice tube, telephone system or signal light system. Remote control systems are also used.

Pneumatic systems are often compared to hydraulic systems, but such comparisons can only hold true in general terms.... Control valves are... a necessary part of a typical pneumatic system.... The control valve consists of a lever with two lobes. [In the off position], a spring holds the left poppet closed so that compressed air entering the pressure port cannot flow to the brakes. [In the on position], one lobe of the lever holds the left poppet open and a spring closes the right poppet. Compressed air now flows around the opened left poppet, through a drilled passage, and into a chamber below the right poppet. Since the right poppet is closed, the high-pressure air flows out of the brake port and into the brake line to apply the brakes. To release the brakes, the control valve is returned to the off position.

CONT

In a collaborative project with the Canadian Space Agency, two vibration isolation systems for zero-g environments have been developed-the Motion Isolation Mount(MIM) for orbital flights and the Large Motion Isolation Mount(LMIM) for parabolic flights. The approach taken for MIM has been to develop a mechanism having two parts : a stator attached to the structure and a payload-carrying flotor, with the only coupling between the two components being a flexible umbilical carrying signals and power to the flotor. The flotor is actively magnetically levitated by a set of wide-gap voice coil actuators. Its position relative to the stator is sensed by an optical position sensor while its absolute acceleration is sensed by an inertial accelerometer system. A digital controller uses the sensed information to compute actuator currents based on a control law that regulates acceleration and steady-state position to zero. The weak coupling between stator and flotor and the insensitivity of actuator force with position makes such a system extremely effective for vibration isolation...

The anti-g suit system actuator design is similar to the dynamic seat actuator design. It is a combination of hydraulic and pneumatic actuators. The suit is inflated pneumatically; however, the air is controlled by a hydraulic actuator which acts on a control bellows which maintains the proper airflow to the suit. This technique provides the suit with very good pressure response during both inflation and deflation. Such response would be difficult with pneumatic control alone. Similar to the seat and lap belt, the system includes position feedback.
