The master, or sailing master, was a historical rank for a naval officer trained in and responsible for the navigation of a sailing vessel. The rank can be equated to a professional seaman and specialist in navigation, rather than as a military commander.

The master's main duty was navigation, taking the ship's position at least daily and setting the sails as appropriate for the required course and conditions. During combat, he was stationed on the quarterdeck, next to the captain. The master was responsible for fitting out the ship, and making sure they had all the sailing supplies necessary for the voyage.

Hours worked in excess of the maximum regular number of hours fixed by statute, union contract, or custom.

It has always been a recognized employer’s prerogative to fix the hours of work of his/her employees, within certain limits laid down by law. In some jurisdictions, the maximum workweek seems to be an absolute maximum whereby employees may not be permitted to work any hours in excess of those stipulated. In other cases, employees may not be required to work any excess hours, which means that in practice the employees can refuse the overtime work scheduled for them. Some jurisdictions also give employees the right to refuse overtime if they do not receive adequate notice or if they face a personal emergency.

extra duty(or extra work) : Refers to an additional work, i. e. an activity which is outside of the normal parameters of an employee's position, and not to the time spent to excute some work. It can be executed during normal working hours or during overtime. It can be compensated by earning compensatory time or through overtime pay.
