A benthic marine mollusk that belongs to the class Scaphopoda and is characterized by an elongate body and a calcareous shell open at both ends.

Scaphopods are semi-infaunal, marine animals and are fairly common today in nearshore and bathyal environments. Their shells are never abundant in the fossil record, except for occasional local concentrations in Cenozoic deposits. The shell of a modern scaphopod is a tapering tube, open at both ends... Float-type gauges are essentially water level gauges. A float in the gauge receptacle rises as rain water enters the chamber, the rise of the float being recorded by a pen on a suitably calibrated, clock-driven chart. Some float gauges can only record to the capacity of the chamber, but others are equipped with siphoning arrangements to let out the water when the chamber fills and to return the pen to the zero position on the chart. The most serious difficulty with such gauges is in their operation at temperatures below freezing.

The Physics of Hard Spheres Experiment(PHaSE)... will be performed in a multi-angle Light Scattering Instrument(LSI). During operation, each of the samples will be rotated into position for light scattering/data collection activities using both static and dynamic laser sources. Data will be collected using both a high-definition CCD [Charged Coupled Device] camera to record images of the cells and photon counters to measure light scattering.
