The laws of physics provide only a single orbital arc, called the Geostationary Orbital Arc, over the Earth’s equator, at a distance of about 22,500 miles, where the orbital period of a satellite is the same as the Earth’s rotational period. Thus, a satellite placed in this geosynchronous orbital arc over the Equator will remain fixed over a single spot on the Earth’s surface, as if it was at the top of a tall tower. The fact that there is only one such orbital arc, and it is uniquely useful for communicationsatellites, creates a limited resource, i.e. orbital positions along the arc. 3, record 13, English, - orbital%20arc

Orbit control [consists in] controlling satellites to keep [them] flying on the designated orbit. When a satellite flies in low earth orbit(LEO), it gradually descends due to air drag. It is necessary to push the satellite back to the original orbit by activating station-keeping thrusters. Geostationary satellites do not descend due to air drag, however, they do de-orbit from their designated stationary position because the gravitational field of the Earth is not uniform and because the gravitational pull of the Sun and the Moon alters their orbit. In a similar way, geostationary satellites are pushed back to their original position by activating station-keeping thrusters. 2, record 17, English, - orbit%20control

The variation of the direction in space is a conical motion, with vertex at the center of mass, around a perpendicular to the plane of the earth's orbit around the sun, in which the earth and the axis of rotation move together with no change in the position of the axis within the earth. This motion is caused by the gravitational attractions of the sun and the moon. The axis describes a sinuous conical surface at an irregularly varying rate; the motion is, therefore, represented as the resultant of a steady progressive motion in a circular cone of angular opening about 47°, called the "lunisolar precession"... 3, record 19, English, - lunisolar%20precession

Sun glint occurs when the ocean acts like a mirror, directly reflecting the sunlight to the imager of the satellite. Therefore, sun glint, like an image in a mirror, provides two kinds of information. It can help to locate the position of the sun, and its varying brightness and clarity provide information about the reflecting surface. In this way, sun glint is used to study ocean surface activity. 2, record 26, English, - sun%20glint

The alternative to depending on training sites for classification is to apply the concept of signature extension. This term refers to the assumption that a single, more or less constant, spectral signature may be defined as characteristic of any class, and that this signature has broad(universal) applicability to any scene in a region, or even worldwide. As a specific example, the signature for winter wheat at its maturation should be essentially the same for fields in the U. S. Great Plains, Argentina, the Ukraine, and Australia-provided such variables as differing air masses, Sun position, soil types, soil moisture, etc. are compensated for. If that proves true, then an unknown feature or class in a given scene anywhere should be classifiable by comparing its spectral properties(for a Landsat pixel, its multiband digital number [DN] values) to a "data bank" containing standard values for each of many classes. The closest fit of the unknown's DN [digital number] values to those of some one class in the bank is assumed to identify it. 3, record 28, English, - signature%20extension

The nuclear process that powers the sun. It involves the fusion of nuclei in 3 kinds of collisions. The cycle starts for any one proton when it collides with another. This collision produces a deuterium nucleus, a neutrino that shoots off into space and a position that eventually annihilates a stray electron. Next, the deuterium nucleus is hit by another proton, producing a nucleus of helium-3 and a burst of gamma rays. The helium-3 hits another helium-3, producing a nucleus of inert helium and two protons. These 2 protons now start the proton-proton cycle over again. 4, record 33, English, - proton%2Dproton%20chain

La chaîne proton-proton ne comporte que 3 étapes. Le premier mécanisme est celui des étoiles chaudes, le second celui des étoiles froides.
