The Position and Azimuth Determining System(PADS) is a self-contained surveying system which provides fourth-and fifth-order control for U. S. [United States] Army Artillery surveys. The PADS is essentially a velocity aided inertial navigation system which has been designed to provide positional accuracy to 20 meters circular error probable(CEP) and height accuracy to 10 meters probable error(PE) over a 6-hour mission which starts at a "known" survey control point.

A set of parameters which describe the location of satellites with respect to time, and which are transmitted (broadcasted) from the satellites

The broadcast ephemeris is decoded by all GPS [Global Positioning System] receivers. It contains information that allow the GPS receivers to compute the Earth-Centered Earth-Fixed(ECEF) coordinates of each of the satellites relative to the WGS84 datum. The Keplerian elements consist of positional information at a single reference time, and parameters related to the predicted rate of change in order to account for solar radiation and gravity perturbations. Periodic terms are added for argument of perigee, geocentric distance and inclination. The broadcast ephemeris is transmitted daily to the satellites via the Control Segment for future rebroadcast by the satellites.

"Precision Map Image" products have even greater positional accuracy than "Map Image" products. Ground Control Points(GCPs) as well as a map projection are used to spatially align the image. To order a "Precision Map Image" product, ground control points from a map or provided through Global Positional Satellite(GPS) technology are required. To further enhance the positional accuracy of the image, Digital Elevation Models(DEMs) can be used to correct terrain distortions. A DEM at sufficient detail will be needed to provide ortho-correction services.

Data from all single beam modes can be processed to this product (i.e., all but ScanSAR beam modes). "Precision Map Image" products are offered as 8-bit or 16-bit data products.

Three main categories of data products are available - RAW Data, Path-Oriented and "Map-Oriented" products. Precision Map Image processing level belongs to the "Map-Oriented" products.

The project is named the Autonomous Space Processor for Orbital Debris(ASPOD) and is a NASA/Universities Space Research Association(USRA) sponsored design project. The development of ASPOD and the students’ abilities in designing and building a prototype spacecraft are the ultimate goals of this project. This year's focus entailed the development of a secondary robotic arm and end-effector to work in tandem with an existent arm in the removal of orbital debris. The new arm features the introduction of composite materials and a linear drive system, thus producing a light-weight and more accurate prototype. The main characteristic of the end-effector design is that it incorporates all of the motors and gearing internally, thus not subjecting them to the harsh space environment. Furthermore, the arm and the end-effector are automated by a control system with positional feedback. This system is composed of magnetic and optical encoders connected to a 486 PC via two servo-motor controller cards. Programming a series of basic routines and sub-routines has allowed the ASPOD prototype to become more autonomous. The new system is expected to perform specified tasks with a positional accuracy of 0. 5 cm.

Altering positional information with grafting experiments: A region called the zone of polarizing activity (ZPA) is the reference point for indicating the position of cells along the anterior-posterior axis of a vertebrate limb bud. The ZPA is located where the posterior margin of the bud is attached to the body.

Control of the expression of AV-1 protein, a position-specific antigen, by ZPA(zone of polarizing activity) factor in the chick limb bud... Retinoic acid induces a pattern of digits in anterior half wing buds that lack the zone of polarizing activity... The positional signal localized to the posterior zone of polarizing activity or ZPG region of the vertebrate limb is transiently expressed during development and a decline in ZPA signaling is accelerated when posterior cells are dissociated and cultured in vitro. The evidence that cultured posterior cells display a precocious decline in ZPA signaling when compared to in vivo studies suggests that a factor present in the limb bud maintains or stabilizes ZPA signaling during limb outgrowth...
