PREDICTIVE CAPABILITY [6 records]

Record 1 2004-03-19

English

Subject field(s)
  • Climatology
  • Meteorological Forecasting, Data Measurement and Analysis
CONT

Public policy is often created to try to influence a desired outcome. Unquestionably, it makes good sense to do all that we can to retain the predictability of our climate. Climate is our ally. If we threaten that alliance, we could jeopardize the very climatic conditions upon which nations plan themselves.

OBS

Not to be confused with the concept of predictive capability(e. g. of a model).

Key term(s)
  • climate predictability

French

Domaine(s)
  • Climatologie

Record 2 2001-09-24

English

Subject field(s)
  • Air Pollution
  • Modelling (Mathematics)
  • Water Pollution
CONT

Identification and quantification of specific sink mechanisms together with the accompanying meteorological data will allow model development and refinement and subsequently very accurate predictive capability.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Pollution de l'air
  • Modélisation (Mathématique)
  • Pollution de l'eau
CONT

La vérification des modèles après leur calage consiste à comparer les comportements prédits et observés sur un ensemble de «cas» distinct de celui ayant servi au calage : seule cette démarche permet de s'assurer véritablement du pouvoir de prédiction du modèle.

PHR

Capacité prédictive d'un modèle.

Subject field(s)
  • Mathematics
  • Environmental Studies and Analyses
  • Air Pollution
CONT

In the Alberta Oil Sands Experimental Study, the most commonly used formulas, namely Briggs..., TVA 1971 and 1972... were selected to examine their predictive capability in determining the rise of the GCOS plume.

OBS

TVA 1971 and 1972. Two models for [delta]h were developed at the Air Quality Branch of the Tennessee Valley Authority by Montgomery et al (1971 & 1972). The formulas are based on a full-scale study of plume rise from a large electric generating plant. The first model follows that of Briggs and is based on the 2/3 law. The second however is not based on the 2/3 law but on a best fit to the experimental observations.

English

Subject field(s)
  • Environmental Studies and Analyses
  • Air Pollution
  • Data Banks and Databases
CONT

In order to improve the predictive capability in determining the dispersion coefficients many workers developed improved models for... [large] applications.... One of these models was developed by Carpenter(TVA model). The model was based on measurements of concentration patterns of plumes from elevated sources.

English

Subject field(s)
  • Environmental Studies and Analyses
CONT

... there are practical tools available for developing a predictive capability but they must be included as integral elements of the assessment strategy adopted and the supporting tactical studies.

Record 6 1985-04-24

English

Subject field(s)
  • Biochemistry
  • Human Diseases
CONT

Certainly an analytically predictive capability based on structural and functional information on macromolecules and microbial metabolites has already been demonstrated and among other things brings nearer the ability to design specific drugs, the "magic bullets" of Paul Ehrlich.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Biochimie
  • Maladies humaines
CONT
