CONT

Predictive digital soil mapping(PDSM) is a mapping technique enabled by advances in computing and data science that uses numerical or statistical models to combine information about soil-forming factors obtained from spatial data layers(environmental covariates) with point soil data in order to estimate soil features for a map area...

OBS

Conventional and digital soil mapping differ primarily in the way that soil classes or attribute values are assigned to locations. In conventional soil mapping, a combination of field inspection, extrapolation and expert knowledge is used, while in digital soil mapping, field information and quantitative inference models are used to predict soil conditions at given locations.

CONT

Subject field(s)
  • Cartography
  • Remote Sensing
DEF

A method that involves deriving geological information from any available geoscience data, usually acquired remotely.

OBS

Examples of remotely-acquired geoscience data are: aerial photographs, satellite imagery, and airborne geophysical data.

OBS

Remote predictive mapping facilitates time-efficient production of consistent up-to-date digital geological map databases over large regions.

CONT

The predictive map or series of maps are by no means ’end products’ but are intended to help assist, guide, and plan field-mapping campaigns, as well as assist in the production of the ’final' geological map.

CONT

Avalanche hazard map is an indispensable tool [used] to evaluate avalanche danger, when one investigates [the] cause of avalanche disasters, predicts avalanche release, and plans or designs avalanche protection facilities.

CONT

A product of avalanche expert systems is an avalanche hazard map, which details the size, frequency, and aerial extent of potential avalanches. Manually produced hazard maps have been created from field observations over small areas in the Alps since 1878... These avalanche-cadastre maps show where avalanches have occurred; they have no predictive components and only consider extreme avalanche events with maximum run-out zones and pressure forces.

CONT

Look at the avalanche hazard map before making your decision. [Example approved by the Avalanche Bulletin Terminology Standardization Committee.]

avalanche hazard map: term officially approved by the Avalanche Bulletin Terminology Standardization Committee.
