We use the term baseline to mean a description of conditions existing before development against which subsequent changes can be detected through monitoring... As such, the baseline study itself is not a predictive tool, although it does describe the condition from which a valued ecosystem component is predicted to change.

CONT

We use the term baseline to mean a description of conditions existing before development against which subsequent changes can be detected through monitoring.... To fulfill this role, baselines normally must consist of statistically adequate descriptions of the variability inherent in the valued ecosystem components prior to the onset of the planned action. As such, the baseline study itself is not a predictive tool, although it does describe the condition from which a valued ecosystem component is predicted to change.

CONT

Dynamics is a term that covers all of the intramolecular motions of proteins. These may be the motions of individual atoms, groups of atoms, or whole sections of the protein. These motions can be divided into three broad categories, characterized by the extent and time scale of the motion and by the method that is used to study it;... 1) atomic fluctuations,... 2) collective motions,... 3) triggered conformational changes.... As the predictive abilities increase, the study of protein dynamics will have application to practical problems in endeavors such as genetic engineering or the effort to modify an enzyme to better serve an industrial process.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Sciences biologiques
CONT

La dynamique des protéines [...] étudie [...] les mouvements moléculaires [...] des protéines. [...]

CONT

In the Alberta Oil Sands Experimental Study, the most commonly used formulas, namely Briggs..., TVA 1971 and 1972... were selected to examine their predictive capability in determining the rise of the GCOS plume.

OBS

TVA 1971 and 1972. Two models for [delta]h were developed at the Air Quality Branch of the Tennessee Valley Authority by Montgomery et al (1971 & 1972). The formulas are based on a full-scale study of plume rise from a large electric generating plant. The first model follows that of Briggs and is based on the 2/3 law. The second however is not based on the 2/3 law but on a best fit to the experimental observations.

... environmental impact assessment was defined for discussion purposes as a process, or sequence of activities, beginning with a pre-project data acquisition programme(the baseline study), followed by an interpretive, predictive and evaluative phase(the preparation and review of an impact assessment report) after which post-construction environmental assessment continues for some period of time(the monitoring programme). This definition... encouraged the participants to consider the overall approach rather than restricting their thinking to the familiar Environmental Impact Statement(EIS) which is all too often the main focus for bureaucratic and public attention.
