In his theory of the development of intelligence in stages, Piaget distinguishes four different periods of development relative to the form of organization of cognitive structures, and passing organically into one another : the periods of(a) sensorimotor intelligence,(b) preoperational representation,(c) concrete operations and(d) formal operations. The period of sensorimotor intelligence embraces the time when development is taking place from the first reflex-like forms of behavior shortly after birth, passing through the first motor habits, the connecting of means and ends, and active experimentation, and finally reaching the stage of spontaneous invention and the internalization of what until then were sensorimotor schemata, at the age of 1 1/2 to 2 years. 1, record 1, English, - sensorimotor%20intelligence

But, whereas operations at this stage [concrete operations] are still bound up with concrete activity, at the last stage of development of intelligence, the period of formal operations(11 to 15 years), they become independent of the concrete object, and the individual acquires the capacity to draw purely formal conclusions from hypothetical assumptions. 4, record 2, English, - formal%20operation

At about the age of 7, thinking loses its egocentric and unilaterally centered character and, at the stage of "concrete operations"(7-11 years) reaches a mobile state of balance marked by a system of now reversible coordinated transformations. 2, record 5, English, - concrete%20operation
