Cascade classifiers may be used to implement rare object detection in images. Such a cascade classifier comprises a plurality of detection stages that have been trained to detect whether a given image is part of or contains a type of rare object, such as a face. The cascade classifier comprises a plurality of detection stages, with each detection stage deciding whether to accept the image and propagate it to a subsequent stage or to reject the image and label it as a negative. If the image reaches the final detection stage and is accepted, the image is labeled as a positive. 1, record 1, English, - cascade%20classifier

There’s a lot of evidence that they can both occur at the same time. When we add a rapid change to the snowpack, just like silly putty, it introduces stored elastic energy into the system making it capable of propagating a fracture. ...

Propagation is the spread of a crack in a weak layer from an initial fracture location. A fracture can propagate at about the speed of sound, which makes it possible for huge slabs of snow to release from a mountainside instantaneously. The propagation potential of a particular slab and weak layer dictates how large an avalanche may become once triggered, and also determines if it's possible to trigger avalanches from flatter terrain connected to steeper slopes. 3, record 36, English, - propagation

... imaging radar systems are active sensors that "illuminate" surface features with broadcast microwave energy and record a returned signal. Most imaging radar systems produce microwaves with wavelengths between 1 cm and 1 meter, longer than the wavelengths used in weather radar to detect rain and snow. These longer wavelength microwave signals propagate through the atmosphere and clouds with almost no interaction or weakening. As a result imaging radar systems can be used to map surface features day or night and in almost any weather conditions. These characteristics make radar imaging especially useful in tropical and polar regions where persistent cloud cover hampers optical remote sensing efforts. 2, record 38, English, - surface%20feature

CEDAR is a broad-based, community-initiated, upper atmospheric research program. The goal is to understand the behavior of atmospheric regions from the middle atmosphere upward through the thermosphere and ionosphere into the exosphere in terms of coupling, energetics, chemistry, and dynamics on regional and global scales. These processes are related to the sources of perturbations that propagate upward from the lower atmosphere as well as to solar radiation and particle inputs from above. The activities within this program combine observations, theory and modeling. 2, record 39, English, - Coupling%2C%20Energetics%20and%20Dynamics%20of%20Atmospheric%20Regions

The behaviour of the ionosphere and HF [High Frequency] wave propagation parameters and their possible changes can be described using ionospheric oblique sounding (IOS) data. The changing state of the ionosphere is generally monitored by networks of vertical ionosondes. These radars transmit and receive HF(1-30MHz) radio waves to and from the ionosphere directly above the monitoring station. The result is real-time information on the state of the ionosphere needed by communications users allowing them to adapt their operational systems accordingly. The oblique ionospheric sounder extends this idea. The transmitter and receiver of the oblique sounder are not co-located like the vertical but are generally hundreds thousands of kilometres apart. So the instrument is able to study how the radio signals of real communications(below 30MHz) propagate via the ionosphere under a variety of conditions. However the interpretation of the oblique propagation is also significantly harder than the case of the vertical. 3, record 50, English, - oblique%20ionospheric%20sounding

A radio spectrometer has been built on Bruny Island, south of Hobart, for the study of solar bursts in the rarely observed frequency range from 3 to 20 MHz. This spectrometer is an adaptive device that employs digital techniques to avoid most of the strong terrestrial interference prevalent in this frequency range. The residual interference that cannot be avoided is excised during off-line processing. As a result, successful observations are made down to the minimum frequency that can propagate through the ionosphere to the antenna. This minimum frequency depends upon the zenith distance of the Sun and it is usually between 4 and 8 MHz. 2, record 55, English, - radio%20spectrometer

The electronics expert functions at three levels. At the local level of the circuit's components, the electronics expert applies general knowledge of the principles of electronics to propagate quantitative information about voltage and currents across components. These local inferences, expressed as quantitative ranges, are then translated into qualitative assertions for a rule-based system that infers the behavior of the circuit's modules. Finally, at the global level, the electronics expert uses circuit-specific knowledge to analyze the circuit in terms of the behavior of logical modules. The circuit-specific knowledge is represented as a behavior tree which is central to the expert's reasoning capabilities. 2, record 76, English, - electronics%20expert

Acoustic microscopy is the term applied to high resolution, high frequency ultrasonic inspection techniques which produce images of features beneath the surface of a sample. Because ultrasonic energy requires continuity of materials to propagate, internal defects such as voids, delaminations and cracks interfere with the transmission and/or reflection of ultrasound signals. Since air is a very poor conductor of ultrasound, gaps within or between samples are easily visualized by the localized changes in the ultrasound. 1, record 80, English, - acoustic%20microscopy

VanLehn spends very little of his voluminous dissertation on demonstrating the coverage of his theory. Most of his effort goes into underlining its principled construction. First, he traces the performance of his model to a restricted set of sufficient principles, emphasizing that his design is transparent with respect to them. Second, he argues that these principles are necessary to the theory for empirical and explanatory adequacy by comparing them with potential competitors in what he calls competitive argumentation. In this context, it becomes essential to have well-defined processes by which modifications to the underlying principles propagate through the theory, via the kind of global constraints called entailments in REPAIR theory. VanLehn is now advocating his competitive argumentation as a general methodology for validating AI-based theories of human cognition(VanLehn et al., 1984). One of his central claims is that the contributions of a solid argumentation may well outlive the theory it was meant to support. 1, record 81, English, - competitive%20argumentation

Because of variations of sound velocity with depth, sound rays are bent as they propagate from point to point.... In order to trace the path of a ray, the velocity profile is divided into layers of constant velocity and paths are then computed by Snell' s law for rays leaving the source at different angles. In earlier work various types of analog computers were used but digital computers, are now favoured. 1, record 90, English, - velocity%20profile
