Eruptions characterized histologically by epidermal intercellular edema, termed spongiosis.

OBS

Eczemas can be acute, with marked spongiosis causing red papules and vesicles and oozing, weeping, and crusting, or they may be chronic, with redness, scaling, fissuring, and especially lichenification. Both acute and chronic forms of eczema may affect the same patient, with the acute reaction progressing to oozing and crusting; with continued pruritus, the patient's rubbing and scratching converts the eczema to the chronic, dry, lichenified form.

Nummular eczematous dermatitis. This condition is defined by recurrent, coin-shaped patches predominantly on the extensor surfaces of the arms and legs, less often the trunk. Minute patches of vesicles and papules spread to become scaling and thickened, occasionally clearing in the center so that they may resemble superficial fungal infections. Mild to severe pruritus accompanies the patches. Although the cause is unknown, many factors acting alone or in combination may contribute.

Atopic dermatitis. This chronic, eczematous condition of the skin is often associated with a personal or family history of asthma, allergic rhinitis, and atopic eczema. Pruritus is prominent, and the consequent scratching and rubbing lead to lichenification, most typically in the antecubital and popliteal flexural areas. The eczema usually manifests itself after the first few months of life, appearing on the face and extensor areas of the extremities as acute and subacute, red, vesicular and oozing dermatitis.

A form of ichthyosarcotoxism caused by the ingestion of a toxic histaminelike substance produced by the action of bacteria on histidine, a normal component of fish flesh.

Scombroid fish(tuna, bonito, mackerel, etc.) are particularly susceptible to bacterial decomposition, and when inadequately preserved contaminated fish are eaten the symptoms of the illness(epigastric pain, nausea, vomiting, headache, dysphagia, thirst, urticaria, and pruritus) develop and usually last for less than 24 hours.
