PYRAMIDAL TRACT [5 records]

Record 1 2011-08-16

English

Subject field(s)
  • Symptoms (Medicine)
  • Musculoskeletal System
DEF

Extension of the great toe and abduction of the other toes instead of the normal flexion reflex when the lateral aspect of the sole is stroked sharply, considered indicative of pyramidal tract involvement("positive" Babinski).

French

Domaine(s)
  • Symptômes (Médecine)
  • Appareil locomoteur (Médecine)
DEF

Record 3 2001-09-03

English

Subject field(s)
  • Nervous System
DEF

An imprecise term referring to a functional rather than anatomical part of the central nervous system that controls motor activities and is not part of the pyramidal tract; it includes the corpus stiatum, subthalamic nucleus, substantia nigra, and red nucleus along with their interconnections with the reticular formation, cerebrum and cerebellum; they control and coordinate especially the postural, static, supporting, and locomotive mechanisms.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Système nerveux
DEF

Record 4 2001-09-03

English

Subject field(s)
  • Nervous System
DEF

A term applied to two groups of fibers (corticonuclear and corticospinal) arising chiefly in the sensorimotor regions of the cerebral cortex and descending in the internal capsule, cerebral peduncle, and pons to the medulla oblongata, the corticonuclear fibers synapsing with motor nuclei throughout the brain stem.

OBS

Most of the corticospinal fibers cross in the decussation of the pyramids and descend in the spinal cord as the lateral corticospinal tract; most of the uncrossed fibers form the anterior corticospinal tract; both end by synapsing with internuncial and motor neurons. The pyramidal tract is a phylogenetically new tract, most prominent in man, and provides for direct cortical control and initiation of skilled movements, especially those related to speech and involving the hand and fingers.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Système nerveux
DEF

DEF

A sign of a lesion of the pyramidal tract : extension of the big toe with fanning out of the other toes can be seen on applying pressure progressively more distally along the length of the tibial crest.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Symptômes (Médecine)
  • Système nerveux
DEF
