Lorsque l'on décompose le sulfate de potassium par un grand excès de charbon divisé, on obtient un mélange intime de polysulfure de potassium, de potasse anhydre et de charbon, le tout d'une grande combustibilité, que l'on nomme pyrophore de Gay-Lussac. On obtient également une matière pyrophorique à l'aide du fer : si l'on réduit à température modérée l'oxyde ferrique pur par l'hydrogène, on obtient une poudre noire poreuse qui s'enflamme à la température ordinaire, dès qu'on la projette dans l'air.
