Record 3 2003-05-30

English

Subject field(s)
  • Launchers (Astronautics)
OBS

The vertical separation system works by means of a flexible air-tight sleeve that is "inflated" by a small pyrotechnic charge, pushing the two fairing halves apart. To avoid damaging the sleeve by the pyrotechnic shock, the pyrotechnic charge is enclosed in two concentric perforated tubes which attenuate the pressure shock as the gases expand into the flexible tube.

Record 4 2003-03-12

English

Subject field(s)
  • Launchers (Astronautics)
CONT

A double pyrotechnic system is used to separate the fairing. The vertical separation system, which is the same as that designed for the Ariane 4, splits the fairing in two when it separates from the launcher. It has a pyrotechnic cord incorporated into one side of the shell edge and this is bolted to the other half of the shell. When the cord is detonated, it sections the bolt and a flexible fully sealed sleeve pushes the other half of the shell away.
