STED [stimulated emission depletion] microscopy was the first high-resolution microscopy concept applied more widely for the study of biological questions. As performed in classical confocal laser scanning microscopy, a conventional laser beam is used to stimulate the fluorescent molecules in what is a normal excited spot(of several hundred nanometers in diameter). A second toroidal(doughnut shaped) beam is used to quench the fluorophores by stimulated emission. By overlapping the two beams, fluorescence is allowed only from the center of the spot, which thus generates a much smaller exciting focal spot... Thus, in practical terms, a smaller effective PSF [point spread function] is generated that causes less blurring and, therefore, results in higher resolution. Theoretically, the gain in resolution is not physically limited : it only depends on the power of the quenching laser beam(the higher the power, the smaller the imaging spot becomes). 1, record 20, English, - quenching%20laser%20beam

2, record 33, French, - centre%20de%20quenching

When an ionizing particle enters the device, it collides with gas atoms and strikes electrons from their orbit around the nucleus of the gas atoms. In addition, an ionizing particle striking the outside of the tube can also knock electrons off the metal casing. In either case, these free electrons then are attracted to the positively charged central wire, gaining energy by the attraction. As they approach the wire they knock electrons off other atoms, creating an avalanche or cascade effect which results in a pulse of current large enough to be detected. A "quenching gas" is usually added to the filler gas so that these avalanches will dissipate over time and not continue indefinitely, which would cause inaccuracy or electronic failure. 1, record 34, English, - quenching%20gas

1, record 49, French, - extinction%20de%20fluorescence

Three Materials Science Research Racks will be a major portion of the U. S. Laboratory facilities. The European Space Agency will provide the core for the Experiment Module that will occupy the right half of the rack and will house five insert modules. NASA and ESA [European Space Agency] each will provide two inserts, and the German Space Agency(DLR) will provide a fifth. Each of the five inserts will be a furnace to process materials in different ways, such as melting and freezing a sample from one end to the other(directional solidification) or quenching a sample quickly to "freeze" its condition. The German insert will be a special furnace that uses a rotating magnetic field to control flows within the molten samples. The left half of the rack will be occupied for nine months by equipment from NASA's Space Products Development Division, before it is made available to microgravity science researchers. The Experiment Modules and their inserts will be replaceable in orbit, so an entire rack will not have to be returned to Earth. There will be a single experiment module in each rack with the experiment support systems taking the left half of the rack and an Experiment Module taking the right half of the rack. 4, record 63, English, - materials%20science%20research%20rack

The detection of spots is sometimes easier than with paper chromatography because more universal techniques can be used. Frequently, colorless or nonfluorescent spots can be visualized by exposing the developed plate to iodine vapor. The iodine vapor interacts with the sample components, either chemically or by solubility, to produce a color. Thin-layer plates and sheets are commercially available which incorporate a fluorescent dye in the powdered adsorbent. When held under ultraviolet light, dark spots appear where sample spots occur due to quenching of the plate fluorescence. 3, record 72, English, - spot
