An LF [low frequency]/MF [medium frequency] or UHF [ultra high frequency] radio beacon transmitting non-directional signals whereby the pilot of an aircraft equipped with direction-finding equipment can determine his or her bearing to or from the radio beacon and "home" on or track to or from the station.

When the radio beacon is installed in conjunction with the instrument landing system (ILS) marker, it is normally called a "marker beacon."

Since the NDB is a low frequency, amplitude modulated radio station; it is subject to atmospheric disturbances that effect range and bearing accuracy. These can be lightning, precipitation static and sunspot activity.

The angle between the apparent direction of a definite source of emission of electromagnetic waves and a reference direction, as determined at a radio direction-finding station. A true radio bearing is one for which the reference direction is that of True North. A magnetic radio bearing is one for which the reference direction is that of Magnetic North.
