De la précocité de croissance des plantes au printemps dépend le nombre de bourgeons qui se développeront pendant la période où la durée du jour sera inférieure à la photopériode critique; des basses températures hivernales dépend leur aptitude à être initiés. En effet, les basses températures hivernales nécessaires pour assurer une bonne croissance au printemps (voir paragraphe dormance) ont une action inhibitrice sur l'initiation florale; cette période inhibitrice est temporaire, sa durée dépend de la quantité de froid subie par la plante (quantité qu'on ne sait pas évaluer aujourd'hui).
