When sea level rises with the incoming tide to the point where it is higher than the river level upstream from the rock shelf, the seawater forces its way upstream against the flow of the river and through the narrow point in the channel. Canoe/kayak slalom began to develop about six years after the first international canoe/kayak federation was founded in 1924. The sport got its start in Switzerland, modeled after alpine skiing. Just as skiers in slalom races have to maneuver through gates, so would canoers/kayakers as their boats travelled down whitewater rapids. 2, record 15, English, - canoe%2Fkayak%20slalom

1, record 15, French, - cano%C3%AB%2Dkayak%20slalom

There is one other stroke for paddling a straight course that should be covered here. It is a very useful stroke for paddling in a strong wind, running rapids, and paddling silently to sneak up on animals. It is called the indian stroke or underwater stroke and is an extension of the Canadian stroke. As the paddle knifes forward, the grip of the paddle is rotated in the palm of your upper hand. The rotation makes it possible to bring the paddle around, ready for the next power stroke without taking the blade out of the water, it's a very nice stroke to know because with the paddle remaining in the water, the canoeist is in control throughout the entire stroke. 1, record 31, English, - indian%20stroke

At the opposite end of the scale from the panic zone lies what Robert Kriegel calls the "drone zone". Kriegel believes that too much emphasis on mastery of a particular skill can lead to a sudden and quite unexpected feeling of job dissatisfaction stemming from boredom. Although it can sometimes feel great to escape the rapids of the panic zone for the slower waters of mastering a particular scientific or engineering task, it is the opportunity to shuttle between challenge and mastery that keeps a job interesting. 1, record 45, English, - drone%20zone

Whereas the English generally retains "lac" with a French name, other place-names tend more easily to a translation of the generic. Hence "River" instead of "rivière". This would follow the same logic of the area inhabitants that gives "Lac des Chênes" and "Des Chênes Rapids". While "lac" generally remains in French, other geographic names such as "rivière" or "rapides" tend to be translated. 1, record 80, English, - La%20P%C3%AAche%20River
