Tropical cyclones are experienced in several areas of the world. In general, they form over the tropical oceans (except the South Atlantic and the eastern South Pacific) and affect the eastern and equatorward portions of the continents. They occur in the tropical North Atlantic (including the Caribbean Sea and Gulf of Mexico), the North Pacific off the west coast of Mexico and occasionally as far west as Hawaii, the western North Pacific (including the Philippine Islands and the China Sea), the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea, the southern Indian Ocean off the coasts of Madagascar and the northwest coast of Australia, and the South Pacific Ocean from the east coast of Australia to about 140°W. 6, record 9, English, - tropical%20cyclone

5, record 9, French, - cyclone%20tropical

If a frost period is sufficiently severe to end the growing season or delay its beginning, it is commonly referred to as a "killing frost. "Because frost is primarily an event that occurs as the result of radiational cooling, it can occur with standard observing level temperature(at 5 feet above ground) in the mid to upper 30's. 4, record 10, English, - frost%20warning

In consulted sources, "frost warning" and "frost advisory" are defined in the same manner. However, Environment Canada differentiates a "warning" from an "advisory": "A weather advisory is issued when forecast conditions are expected to cause general inconvenience or concern, and do not pose a serious enough threat to issue a weather warning. An advisory will often precede a warning." 5, record 10, English, - frost%20warning

Energetech Australia is building a prototype electricity generator based on wave power on the breakwater at Port Kembla in New South Wales. A submerged chamber is open below the water level. When the waves rise up around the chamber, the water inside the chamber rises and falls with the waves. This compresses and decompresses air above the water in the chamber, creating airflow which drives a turbine. The turbines work with the air flowing in both directions. The blades change angle, depending on the speed and direction of the airflow … An ocean wall in the shape of a parabola concentrates the wave energy onto a central point where the power station is located … The amount of converted energy depends on the wind speed, the time the wind blows over the waves, and the distance it covers. During a wave's voyage, it shapes into a more regular wave, commonly referred to as a swell. At ocean shores, swells are very regular and discernable, even when the sea is calm. 1, record 19, English, - wave%20energy%20breakwater

Three families of repetitive sequences have been studied in most detail, including the 35-40 bp [base pair] repetitive extragenic palindromic(REP) sequence, the 124-127 bp enterobacterial repetitive intergenic consensus(ERIC) sequence, and the 154 bp BOX element. These sequences appear to be located in distinct, intergenic positions all around the chromosome. The repetitive elements may be present in both orientations on the chromosome, and PCR [polymerase chain reaction] primers have been designed to "read outward" from the inverted repeats in REP and ERIC, and from the boxA subunit of BOX. The use of the above primer(s) and PCR leads to the selective amplification of distinct genomic regions located between REP, ERIC or BOX sequences. The corresponding protocols are referred to as REP-PCR, ERIC-PCR and BOX-PCR, respectively, and rep-PCR collectively. Some feel that merely the use of permanent downhole gauges (PDGs) that monitor and collect wellbore and/or reservoir data, constitutes an IW. Then there are others who believe that use of simple hydraulic-controlled, remote-operated, downhole-flow-control devices with only on/off position control but no downhole monitoring, should be considered an IW. A definition accepted .... among others, is that an IW installation is one that includes all of the following capabilities: Monitoring: The ability to monitor wellbore and/or reservoir characteristics in real time; Optimization: Analyze the data from monitoring, and pro-actively adjust flow regimes from multiple zones or laterals; Flow control: Utilization of remotely operated downhole-flow-control devices ... for adjustment of flow regimes. 2, record 28, English, - intelligent%20well%20technology

The development of intelligent well technology began in the late 1980s. New downhole technology to better monitor and control production without intervention was seen as a solution to maximize the potential of aging reservoirs. Applications for permanent seismic sensing as a reservoir optimization tool grew out of conventional borehole seismic techniques that have been used for many years. 7, record 28, English, - intelligent%20well%20technology

Boil-off. When liquid propellants are stored at temperatures above their boiling-point they vaporize. If we contain the vapors in the tank, then the pressure increases with temperature. Since the tank weight increases with design pressure, a pressure relief valve is generally provided to prevent the tank from over pressurizing and exploding. When the relief valve releases the pressure, some of the propellant escapes from the tank. This lost propellant is referred to as boil-off loss. 2, record 32, English, - boil%2Doff

Laser Scanning Confocal Microscopy(LSCM, also referred to as CSLM, Confocal Scanning Laser Microscopy) is now established as a valuable tool for obtaining high resolution images and 3-D reconstructions of a variety of biological specimens. In LSCM, a laser light beam is expanded to make optimal use of the optics in the objective. Through a x-y deflection mechanism this beam is turned into a scanning beam, focussed to a small spot by an objective lens onto a fluorescent specimen. The mixture of reflected light and emitted fluorescent light is captured by the same objective and(after conversion into a static beam by the x-y scanner device) is focused onto a photodetector(photomultiplier) via a dichroic mirror(beam splitter). The reflected light is deviated by the dichroic mirror while the emitted fluorescent light passes through in the direction of the photomultiplier. A confocal aperture(pinhole) is placed in front of the photodetector, such that the fluorescent light(not the reflected light!) from points on the specimen that are not within the focal plane(the so called out-of-focus light) where the laser beam was focussed will be largly obstructed by the pinhole. In this way, out-of-focus information(both above and below the focal plane) is greatly reduced. 2, record 34, English, - confocal%20laser%20scanning%20microscopy

In the sea, the geopotential is negative in reference to that of the sea level geoid. The term dynamic depth is therefore commonly employed as the negative of the geopotential in the sea. The buckwheat flower has no petals-the sexual parts, the ovary, three styles and eight stamens being enclosed in the petallike sepas. Four of the anthers bend out but turn their pollen inward. The other four turn their pollen outward(Knuth 1909, pp. 341-342). Some plants have flowers, referred to as the "thrum" type, with short styles and long filaments so the stamens extend above the styles. Other flowers, referred to as "pin" types, have long styles and short filaments so the stigma is avobe the anthers. Occasionally, the styles and stamens are at the same height. The long stamens and filaments are fully 3 mm; the shorter ones, about 2 mm. Although each plant bears flowers of only one form, the seeds from either form will produce plants having the dimorphic forms in about equal numbers. The thress styles lead to a single ovary with one ovule, so a flower can produce only one seed, which is about one-quarter inch long. 2, record 41, English, - microstylous

Heat-loving microbes, or thermophiles, are among the best studied of the extremophiles. Some hyperthermophiles even thrive in environments hotter than 100 degrees C(212 degrees F), the boiling point of water at sea level. In comparison, most-variety bacteria grow fastest in temperatures between 25 and 40 degrees C(77 and 104 degrees F). Further, no multicellular animals or plants have been found to tolerate temperatures above about 50 degrees C(122 degrees F), and no microbial eukarya yet discovered can tolerate long-term exposure to temperatures higher than about 60 degrees C(140 degrees F). 1, record 47, English, - hyperthermophile

1, record 49, French, - effet%20d%27addition%2C%20de%20synergie%20et%20d%27antagonisme

Lignin Preserving or Lignin Removal? Two approaches are used in the chemical bleaching of pulps. One approach is to utilize chemicals that selectively destroy some of the chromophoric groups, but do not materially attack lignin. The other approach is to almost totally remove residual lignin. The selective approach(often referred to as "brightening" to distinguish it from true bleaching) is used for high-yield pulps with significant lignin content. This methodology is limited in many cases to achieving brightness values in the 70's; but under favorable circumstances, values above 80 can be obtained. Although the brightness gains can be substantial, no known method of selective brightening produces a permanent effect; exposure to light and atmospheric oxygen causes the lignin to rapidly discolor, as can be readily observed with old newspapers. 1, record 52, English, - selective%20brightening

Personality Assessment : Observations, Interviews, and Ratings. Personality, according to the most general definition, is a composite of mental abilities, interests, attitudes, temperaments, and other variables characterizing thoughts, feelings, and behavior.... From the above definition it follows that methods of assessing personality include a broad range of cognitive and affective variables. Among these variables are the measures of achievement, intelligence, special abilities, interests, and attitudes.... Other emotional, temperamental, and stylistic characteristics, which have more traditionally been referred to as personality variables, are also important in understanding and predicting behavior. 2, record 56, English, - personality%20assessment

Basically, charts are drawn according to the system of rectangular co-ordinates. Rectangular co-ordinates are based on two straight reference lines perpendicular to each other in a plane(...) The horizontal line is usually referred to as the X-axis, or the abscissa, whereas the vertical line is referred to as the Y-axis, or the ordinate. The two lines divide the plane into four parts called quadrants(...) The point of intersection of the two lines is called the origin, or zero point. Scales are labeled along the two axes, beginning at the point of origin. The abscissas(...) to the right of the origin are conventionally designated as positive, whereas those to the left of the origin are negative. The ordinates(...) above the origin are positive, and those below the origin are negative. Any point on the plane may refer to two values according to the two scales. 1, record 58, English, - system%20of%20rectangular%20co%2Dordinates
