Near-infrared reflectance(NIR) imaging is a noninvasive, noncontact, and rapid in vivo examination currently extensively available for ophthalmologists.... the technique enables visualizing subretinal alterations located in the retinal photoreceptor layer, the retinal pigmented epithelium(RPE), and choroid. The basis is a long excitation wavelength([approximately] 820 nm [nanometres] diode laser) that penetrates the optic media and enables visualizing the retina and choroid in detail. Changes in reflection and absorption of light through retinal tissues enhance visualization of structures beneath the retinal pigment epithelium(RPE) and melanin. Images often correlate with blue-light fundus autofluorescence(FAF) ;however, NIR demonstrates superiority in revealing sub-RPE lesions.

SMBG works by having patients perform a number of glucose tests each day or each week. The test most commonly involves pricking a finger with a lancet device to obtain a small blood sample, applying a drop of blood onto a reagent strip, and determining the glucose concentration by inserting the strip into a reflectance photometer for an automated reading. Test results are then recorded in a logbook or stored in the glucose meter's electronic memory. People with diabetes can be taught to use their SMBG results to correct any deviations out of a desired target range by changing their carbohydrate intake, exercising, or using more or less insulin.

Cutinite. While not very abundant, this maceral is commonly found in most coals and is derived from the waxy outer coating of leaves, roots, and stems. [The] Munsell Colour Chart [or] Munsell chart is used to bring some consistency into the recording of the colours of archaeological items, features and, most commonly, soils and sediments. The chart consists of a book of coloured paint samples each individually numbered. This means that if a person records a sherd of pottery as being the same as colour sample number 10YR5/6 on the chart anyone else with a chart can see exactly what colour that is. The book contains only those colours frequently seen in soils but the Munsell system can record any colour. This system was evolved to prevent the frequent use of arbitrary descriptions of colour.

Imaging spectrometry... is the field in remote sensing where sensors acquire image data in many, narrow and contiguous wavebands. The aim is to produce on a pixel by pixel basis radiance and reflectance data, which can be used to model physical properties of the Earth surface. This data forms an addition to subsurface geophysical data.

Imaging spectroscopy has many names in the remote sensing community, including imaging spectrometry, hyperspectral, and ultraspectral imaging. Spectroscopy is the study of electromagnetic radiation. Spectrometry is derived from spectro-photometry, the measure of photons as a function of wavelength, a term used for years in astronomy. However, spectrometry is becoming a term used to indicate the measurement of non-light quantities, such as in mass spectrometry (e.g. Ball, 1995). Hyper means excessive, but no imaging spectrometer in use can hardly be considered hyper-spectral, after all, a couple of hundred channels pales in comparison to truly high resolution spectrometer with millions of channels. Ultraspectral is beyond hyperspectral, a lofty goal that has not yet been reached. ... Researchers at the USGS Spectroscopy Lab are studying and applying methods for identifying and mapping materials through spectroscopic remote sensing (called imaging spectroscopy, hyperspectral imaging, imaging spectrometry, ultraspectral imaging, etc), on the Earth and throughout the solar system using laboratory, airborne and spacecraft spectrometers.

Vegetation monitoring has been one of the main focal points of remote sensing study since remote sensing research began. Many vegetation indices, using red and infrared reflectance, have been devised. The Perpendicular Vegetation Index(PVI), Ratio Index and Normalized Vegetation Index are among the well known indices of this type. The Perpendicular Vegetation Index, proposed by Richardson and Wiegand(1977), was defined as the distance from the soil line on a scatter plot of near infrared(NIR) versus red reflectance. The pixel vectors of bare land in such plots vary with soil moisture content. The PVI was developed as a vegetation index to effectively monitor the vegetation biomass without being affected by differences in soil background.

Analyses of whole or ground grain by physical methods would be better suited to handling large numbers of samples, as in protein segregation of carlots, or continuous monitoring as in loading an export cargo. Such procedures are now known and include near infrared reflectance(NIR) and near infrared transmission spectroscopy. NIR instruments have been in use for protein segregation in Canadian terminal elevators since 1975. The accuracy and precision of these instruments are equivalent to most of the standard methods of protein analysis including the Kjeldahl. NIR instruments are the most recent introduction to protein testing. They are very rapid and do not require the grain to be ground. An additional advantage of these instruments is their capacity for similarly determining moisture as well as protein. The accuracy of NIR instruments seems adequate for protein segregation.

Les longueurs d'ondes absorbées sont spécifiques à chaque constituant et le degré d'absorption proportionnel à sa concentration. Le spectromètre indique ainsi le spectre réfléchi et permet d'en déduire le spectre d'absorption. C'est une méthode de mesure indirecte. Le spectre d'absorption permet de caractériser un produit exactement comme une empreinte digitale permet d'identifier un criminel par comparaison de «l'empreinte» observée avec une banque de données.
