A technique for determining, by tracing imaginary rays of light from the viewer’s eye to the objects in a scene, the parts of the scene that should be displayed in the resulting display image.

CONT

Ray-tracing technique relies on an extremely time-consuming algorithm to compute the reflection and refraction of light from the surfaces of imaginary objects. Basically the computer program traces individual light rays, starting at the viewpoint and passing backward through each pixel in the image plane until the ray hits a surface. The reflected ray is then continued to see if it could have come from a light source, either directly or after reflection from another object. For a transparent surface a second, refracted ray must also be traced.

The key to the single-lens reflex camera is a mirror. Light coming in through the camera lens is reflected upward by this mirror to a viewing screen, then through a five-sided prism that turns the inverted image right-side up and right-side round and delivers it to the eye. Un radar à synthèse d'ouverture (RSO) est un radar qui effectue un traitement des données reçues afin d'améliorer la résolution azimutale. Le traitement effectué permet d'affiner l'ouverture de l'antenne. On parle donc de synthèse d'ouverture. D'où le nom de ce type de système. A scanner with an oscillating mirror that moves back and forth across the satellite’s direction of travel, creating scan line strips that are contiguous or that overlap slightly.

One type of scanner is called a whiskbroom scanner also referred to as across-track scanners. It uses rotating mirrors to scan the landscape below from side to side perpendicular to the direction of the sensor platform, like a whiskbroom. The width of the sweep is referred to as the sensor swath. The rotating mirrors redirect the reflected light to a point where a single or just a few sensor detectors are grouped together. Whiskbroom scanners with their moving mirrors tend to be large and complex to build. The moving mirrors create spatial distortions that must be corrected with preprocessing by the data provider before image data is delivered to the user. An advantage of whiskbroom scanners is that they have fewer sensor detectors to keep calibrated as compared to other types of sensors.

Traditional methods for acquiring topographic data typically rely on aerial photogrammetry, where measurement of the terrain surface below forest canopy is difficult and error prone. Un radar à synthèse d'ouverture (SAR) est un radar imageur qui effectue un traitement des donnés reçues afin d'améliorer la résolution azimutale. Le traitement effectué permet d'affiner l'ouverture de l'antenne. On parle donc de synthèse d'ouverture. D'où le nom de ce type de système. Les radars à synthèse d'ouverture sont donc à opposer aux «radars à ouverture réelle» (RAR ou real aperture radar en anglais) pour lesquelles la résolution azimutale est simplement obtenue en utilisant une antenne d'émission/réception possédant un lobe d'antenne étroit dans la direction azimutale.

L'émergence récente des données interférométriques radar aéroporté à synthèse d'ouverture en bande P (IFSAR), une technologie de télédétection micro-onde à haute résolution, pourrait fournir des modèles d'altitude significativement plus précis dans les zones forestières. L'énergie à basse fréquence du radar en bande P pénètre physiquement à travers le couvert de végétation et est réfléchie par la surface sous-jacente du terrain permettant la mesure précise de l'altitude à la surface du terrain, même dans les zones de couvert forestier dense.

A rival to LEDs in many applications, LCDs are particularly popular in the watch display market. The name of these devices describes their composition-LCDs have a liquid crystal material sandwiched between two glass plates separated by about 12 um. The glass plates are sealed around their perimeter. The image appears between two layers of conductive material, one etched on the surface of each glass plate. In operation, a voltage is applied between the two layers of conductive material which changes the molecular orientation of the liquid crystal material. The light passing through the display is thus scattered or reflected in nonequal manner where the voltage has been applied. LCDs emit no light, but can use either reflected or transmitted light to form the display. LCD's have the large advantage of consuming considerably less energy than LEDs.
