CONT

Ray-tracing technique relies on an extremely time-consuming algorithm to compute the reflection and refraction of light from the surfaces of imaginary objects. Basically the computer program traces individual light rays, starting at the viewpoint and passing backward through each pixel in the image plane until the ray hits a surface. The reflected ray is then continued to see if it could have come from a light source, either directly or after reflection from another object. For a transparent surface a second, refracted ray must also be traced.

The key to the single-lens reflex camera is a mirror. One type of scanner is called a whiskbroom scanner also referred to as across-track scanners. It uses rotating mirrors to scan the landscape below from side to side perpendicular to the direction of the sensor platform, like a whiskbroom. The width of the sweep is referred to as the sensor swath. The rotating mirrors redirect the reflected light to a point where a single or just a few sensor detectors are grouped together. Whiskbroom scanners with their moving mirrors tend to be large and complex to build. A night time rainbow is sometimes called a moon bow because it is a reflection of the light of the moon.... A laser scanning microscopy system that focuses on a single plane of light through a biological substance, allowing high-resolution, three-dimensional images to be built up.

Laser Scanning Confocal Microscopy(LSCM, also referred to as CSLM, Confocal Scanning Laser Microscopy) is now established as a valuable tool for obtaining high resolution images and 3-D reconstructions of a variety of biological specimens. In LSCM, a laser light beam is expanded to make optimal use of the optics in the objective. Through a x-y deflection mechanism this beam is turned into a scanning beam, focussed to a small spot by an objective lens onto a fluorescent specimen. The mixture of reflected light and emitted fluorescent light is captured by the same objective and(after conversion into a static beam by the x-y scanner device) is focused onto a photodetector(photomultiplier) via a dichroic mirror(beam splitter). The reflected light is deviated by the dichroic mirror while the emitted fluorescent light passes through in the direction of the photomultiplier. A confocal aperture(pinhole) is placed in front of the photodetector, such that the fluorescent light(not the reflected light!) from points on the specimen that are not within the focal plane(the so called out-of-focus light) where the laser beam was focussed will be largly obstructed by the pinhole. In this way, out-of-focus information(both above and below the focal plane) is greatly reduced.

A halo occurs when the light from the sun or the moon is refracted and reflected by ice crystals in the atmosphere... A sundog is a brightly colored spot that appears to the right or left of the sun. Sundogs form when the sun is near the horizon and the sunlight is refracted (bent) by hexagonal, plate-like ice crystals floating horizontally in the air. Sundogs are brightest in winter because ice crystals are more common, but can be seen at any time. Sundogs are also known as mock suns or parhelia.

Why is the sky blue?... Scattering, simply defined, is when light hitting a volume of air is reflected out of the air, as opposed to being absorbed or just passing through. The light bounces off of individual air particles in random directions, scattering, and making that air appear the color of the light being scattered. Preferential light scattering means that some colors of light scatter better, while other colors tend only to pass through. Lord Rayleigh, a 19th century British physicist, first explained preferential light scattering.(Sir Isaac Newton first established the phenomenon's existence.) Common air particle diameters are 1 micron(micrometer),. 1 micron, and. 01 micron.... "Rayleigh's Law indicates that the light energy scattered per unit volume of air containing particles smaller than. 1 micron is inversely proportional to the 4th power of the wavelength of the illuminating radiation(Schaeffer 155) "... More simply stated, the amount of light that bounces around in our air increases as the wavelength(which is related to color) of the light decreases.

A rival to LEDs in many applications, LCDs are particularly popular in the watch display market. The name of these devices describes their composition-LCDs have a liquid crystal material sandwiched between two glass plates separated by about 12 um. The glass plates are sealed around their perimeter. The image appears between two layers of conductive material, one etched on the surface of each glass plate. In operation, a voltage is applied between the two layers of conductive material which changes the molecular orientation of the liquid crystal material. The light passing through the display is thus scattered or reflected in nonequal manner where the voltage has been applied. LCDs emit no light, but can use either reflected or transmitted light to form the display. LCD's have the large advantage of consuming considerably less energy than LEDs.
