A Schroeder diffuser is a structure comprising a number of wells of different, carefully chosen depths.

[The] Schroeder diffuser ... is a high-performance quadratic residue diffuser that employs a series of 15 wells of specific depths to break up and scatter acoustic energy.

OBS

As a soundwave strikes the irregular surface, instead of bouncing off it like a mirror, it bounces out of each well at a slightly different time. The result is many small reflections, spread out in both time and space. The frequencies at which such structures operate as diffusers depend upon their dimensions.

Le son émis par une enceinte ou un instrument se propage vers l'auditeur, le dépasse, va heurter une paroi sur laquelle il se réfléchit, avant de revenir directement ou non, vers l'auditeur. La somme son direct + réflexion crée des interférences qui dégradent la qualité du son. Le diffuseur de Schroeder disperse l'énergie dans le temps et l'espace. Les interférences disparaissent et le champ sonore s'élargit.

OBS

Lorsqu'une onde sonore frappe la surface irrégulière du panneau, cette dernière, au lieu de rebondir comme sur un miroir, réfléchit hors de chaque cellule dans des intervalles rapprochés. Il en résulte plusieurs petites réflexions sonores, dispersées dans l'espace et le temps.

A reflection grating spectrometer works in a very similar way an optical prism does by spreading the incoming light as a function of its different wavelength components. In fact, in the case of XMM, the reflection gratings are nothing more than mirrors with tiny grooves on them.... XMM is the first X-ray mission to fly a reflection grating and will identify lines of elements(like iron, oxygen, silicon, magnesium) common in astrophysical plasmas.
