Record number: 2, Textual support number: 1 CONT
Double rainbows are fairly common.... the primary rainbow appears opposite the sun at an angular distance of about 42 degrees from the antisolar point. The primary bow is the result of a refraction as a ray of sunlight enters the drop, one internal reflection off the back of the drop, and a second refraction as the ray exits the drop. The geometry for the secondary bow is similar except that there are two internal reflections inside the drop. This geometry results in the appearance of the secondary rainbow at an angular distance of about 51 degrees, outside the primary bow. 2, record 2, English, - primary%20rainbow

The most computationally complex and most realistic algorithms for dealing with both reflection and refraction are called ray-tracing algorithms. In essence they trace individual light rays to determine which of them end up at the viewpoint and how they got there. In order to avoid having to deal with an infinity of lines emanating from a point source, the process works backward, starting at each pixel. Each ray starting at the viewpoint and passing through a pixel is projected backward until it hits a surface. The backward tracing of the reflected ray then continues to determine whether it could have come from a light source or from reflection from another object. 1, record 13, English, - ray%2Dtracing%20algorithm
