REFLECTOR MIRROR [12 records]

Record 1 2023-09-12

English

Subject field(s)
  • Optical Instruments
  • Facilities and Instruments (Astronomy)
CONT

Utilizing two mirrors, a reflector telescope has a concave primary mirror located at the bottom of the telescope. It reflects inbound light to a pinpoint. A second flat mirror set at 45 degrees located below the aperture redirects the light, creating a focal point toward the eyepiece.

OBS

There are three main types of reflecting telescopes: the Newtonian telescope, the Cassegrain telescope and the Dobsonian telescope.

Domaine(s)
  • Instruments d'optique
  • Installations et instruments (Astronomie)
CONT

CONT

A shell-shaped or concave recess of reflecting material should be built behind the performers to act as a mirror to throw out the sound on a more or less plane wave-front... If this reflector consists of wood sheathing against the wall, it is well to leave a space by supporting the wood on studs away from the wall.

CONT

1960: Echo 1, first communications balloon satellite, is launched.

OBS

Echo 1, a spherical balloon with a metalized skin, was launched by NASA on 12th August 1960. Once in orbit, the balloon was inflated until it reached its intended diameter of 30 metres and it was then used as a reflector to bounce radio signals across the oceans. Echo was simply a radio mirror in the sky, and its efficiency decreased as the gas which inflated the balloon gradually escaped and it lost its shape.

DEF

... the principal light-gathering surface of a reflective telescope.

CONT

The primary mirror is located at the lower end of the telescope tube in a reflector and has its front surface coated with an extremely thin film of metal, such as aluminum. The back of the mirror is usually made of glass, although other materials have been used from time to time. Pyrex(trademark) was the principal glass of choice for many of the older large telescopes, but new technology has led to the development and widespread use of a number of glasses with very low coefficients of expansion.

CONT
