REFLEX MOVEMENT [6 records]

Record 1 2025-01-10

English

Subject field(s)
  • The Eye
  • The Ear
  • Nervous System
CONT

To maintain a stable perception of the world around us while we engage in normal movements throughout our day, such as walking, we have something known as the vestibulo-ocular reflex(VOR). This reflex keeps us steady and balanced even though our eyes and head are continuously moving when we perform most actions. When we make a head movement, our eye muscles are triggered instantly to create an eye movement opposite to that of our head movement at the exact same speed to readjust the visual world, which, in turn, stabilizes our retinal image by keeping the eye still in space and focused on an object, despite the head motion.

Key term(s)

DEF

Record 2 2024-12-12

English

Subject field(s)
  • Morphology and General Physiology
  • Bowels
CONT

The gastrocolic reflex is a physiological reflex that controls the motility of the lower gastrointestinal tract following a meal. As a result of the gastrocolic reflex, the colon has increased motility in response to the stretch of the stomach with the ingestion of food. The gastrocolic reflex allows room for the consumption of more food via control over peristalsis and movement of ingested food distally toward the rectum.

French

  • Intestins
CONT

Record 3 2013-12-17

English

Subject field(s)
  • Symptoms (Medicine)
CONT

Abdominal reflexes are elicited by briskly stroking the abdomen with an applicator stick moved toward the umbilicus; the normal response is a brief movement of the umbilicus toward the side of stimulation. This reflex should be tested in the upper and lower quadrants of the abdomen. It is abolished on the side of a hemiplegia and is frequently absent bilaterally in multiple sclerosis.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Symptômes (Médecine)
CONT
