Twin lens reflex cameras have two lenses... The upper or "viewing" lens reflects off a fixed mirror and forms an image on a ground glass screen on top of the camera. The lower lens is the one which takes the photograph, and is fitted with a shutter and diaphragm. To use... look down onto the focusing screen to see what you are photographing. Turning the focusing knob moves both lenses backwards and forwards, so when your subject is sharply imaged on the ground glass the taking lens is also focused to give a sharp image on film.

A camera equipped with a mirror, or mirror and prism, whereby the subject is viewed through the camera lens rather than through a separate viewfinder.

CONT

The key to the single-lens reflex camera is a mirror. Light coming in through the camera lens is reflected upward by this mirror to a viewing screen, then through a five-sided prism that turns the inverted image right-side up and right-side round and delivers it to the eye. When a picture is taken, the mirror snaps up momentarily... permitting light to strike the film at the back of the camera. Through-the-lens viewing produces an image virtually identical with that produced on the film.

It is easy to use a supplementary lens on a reflex or other camera that lets you view through the lens to frame and focus the picture. But with rangefinder viewing and non-reflex cameras, you must measure the lens-to-subject distance carefully to make sure the subject will be at the point the lens is focused on.
