Acceleration of ions to a constant energy for TOFMS [time-of-flight mass spectrometry] is achieved by [the] application of an electrostatic field over a known distance(from an ion's initial position to the exit of the acceleration region). By this method, all ions starting from that point, regardless of m/z [mass-to-charge ratio], are sent into the mass-separation region(the flight tube) with the same nominal boost in energy. 2, record 1, English, - flight%20tube

The rate of a particular enzyme-catalysed reaction can often be measured in a number of ways but there is normally one method which is more convenient than the others... The quantitative assay of enzyme activity is carried out most quickly and conveniently when the substrate or the product is colored or absorbs light in the ultraviolet region because the rate of appearance or disappearance of a light-absorbing product or substrate can be followed with a spectrophotometer, giving a continuous record of the progress of the reaction on a strip chart... Enzyme catalysed reactions can be monitored spectrophotometrically, as many of the substrates or products of enzymes absorb visible or non-visible light. This is the commonest and simplest method of assaying enzymes. 2, record 8, English, - assay%20of%20enzyme%20activity

(...) Integral transport methods. The integral transport methods construct an expression for the angular flux at a given location by integrating over all external and scattering sources that could contribute, taking in account the probability of the source neutral reaching the given location without a collision. The collision probability method result from partitioning the domain of the problem into a large number of finite size regions and formulating the equation to calculate the average value of the neutral flux in each region. Like the Monte Carlo method, the result of collision probability method can be very accurate. This method has been successfully implemented for neutral propagating in 3D rectangular grids. Since the collision probability method is based on a global particle balance, the neutral flux at a given region is coupled to the neutral scalar flux of any other regions via collision probabilities which must be calculated by multi-dimensional numerical integration involving expensive evaluation of Bickley functions. 3, record 9, English, - collision%20probability%20method

Juvenile salmonids have been tagged with coded wires in northwestern North America for about 20 years... By this method, a 1-mm length of wire is given a binary code and inserted with an injector into the nasal region of a young fish. The adipose fin is removed and the tagged fish are then released for their seaward migrations. The returning adults are identified by the missing adipose fin. Their snouts are then removed and passed through a magnetometer to locate the wire, which is removed and decoded. Short tandem repeat polymorphisms, also referred to as variable number of tandem repeats(VNTRs), are very important to scientists, because they can be used to identify individuals genetically. Marker systems are used to detect loci that respond to restriction enzyme cleavage by producing a fragment that can have many different lengths. This polymorphism is due to variation in the number of tandem repeats. VNTRs can be identified in various ways. Probes can be developed which will hybridize to complementary sequences after RFLP has been performed on a sample of genomic DNA(Southern blots). A second method involves the use of PCR. If the sequence surrounding the VNTR is known, PCR primers(oligonucleotides) can be designed to amplify the repeat region(s). The information obtained from these experiments is useful in the fields of forensics, population characterization, human gene mapping, identification of genes involved in disease, relationship testing, and identifying genes of interest such as those that encode proteins containing zinc finge. 3, record 13, English, - variable%20number%20of%20tandem%20repeats

2, record 13, French, - nombre%20variable%20de%20r%C3%A9p%C3%A9titions%20en%20tandem

This new approach to autonomous control is based on the fact that non-linear dynamic systems can be controlled using analytically derived functions. The method hinges on defining an artificial potential field which represents the environment in which the vehicle is to manoeuvre. The potential field is configured to have a global minimum at the desired terminal state of the vehicle and has region of high potential which represents path constraints. This property enables active collision avoidance. Vehicle controls are then chosen such that the rate of descent of the potential field along the vehicle trajectory is always rendered negative definite. According to Lyapunov's theorem, this ensures that the vehicle converges to the desired terminal state without violating pre-defined path constraints. 2, record 19, English, - artificial%20potential%20field
