RESIDENT GENE [2 records]

Record 1 2012-11-23

English

Subject field(s)
  • Plant Biology
  • Genetics
CONT

In plants, the introduction of an extra copy of a gene by genetic engineering often results in the opposite of the intended result : instead of increasing gene expression, the introduction gene suppresses its own expression and that of the original, resident copy of the gene. This phenomenon is known as co-suppression.

CONT

CONT

Because recombination in yeast is primarily legitimate rather than illegitimate, it is relatively easy to replace a resident gene with whatever modified gene that you wish. For E. Coli and yeast, such replacement can be done with ease. With mouse, it is possible but very time consuming to do such replacement. For other organisms, it is not yet possible.

CONT
