A MURB is a low-rise building of purely residential occupancy that: consists of a set of separate stacked residential units, with each residential unit having a private entrance either outside the building or from a common hall, lobby, vestibule or stairway inside the building; incorporates a minimum of two vertically stacked residential units and is a minimum of two storeys above finished grade; and contains no more than 32 residential units, including common areas.

Janitors, caretakers and building superintendents clean and maintain the interior and exterior of commercial, institutional and residential buildings and their surrounding grounds. Building superintendents employed in large establishments are responsible for the operation of the establishment and may also supervise other workers. They are employed by office and apartment building management companies, condominium corporations, educational institutions, health care facilities, recreational and shopping facilities, religious, industrial and other establishments.

Bien que la source ROBER 1985 semble les mettre plus ou moins sur le même pied immeuble et maison de rapport, ces deux termes ne sont pas de parfaits synonymes. En effet, si le premier se dit très bien d'une habitation collective comportant de nombreux logements, le second convient plutôt aux petites habitations collectives et englobe même les habitations individuelles louées (pavillons).

Un immeuble moderne comprenant un certain nombre d'appartements est un immeuble d'habitation [...] le terme s'opposant à maison et à maison de rapport. [...] Une maison de rapport est n'importe quelle maison d'habitation dont la location procure des revenus à son propriétaire. Ce peut être une maison divisée en logements de plain-pied dont chacun occupe entièrement le rez-de-chaussée ou un étage.
