Title l of the 1949 Housing Act authorized federal grants and loans to localities for slum clearance and urban redevelopment, under the condition that there be "a feasible method for the temporary relocation of families displaced from the project area and the permanent provision of decent dwellings at prices and rents within the financial means of such families. "Ostensibly, slum clearance was done to promote the building of low and moderate income housing. However, private developers were largely uninterested in inner-city residential redevelopment when vacant land was readily available at the periphery. The first lesson of urban renewal was clearly taught, if not learned : land clearance does not create demand. Instead, public housing was developed in large scale residential "projects" in urban renewal district. 3, record 8, English, - urban%20redevelopment

At present... the formation of urban land rent is no longer due to the presence of a large central town. On the contrary, the rents are now determined by the position with respect to areas destined for particular uses or to smaller urban areas. It is shown... that the distance from the nearest commercial and/or industrial area influences the selling price. In particular, for plots without buildings the highest values are in the immediate vicinity(Lit 8 148/m² at less than 2 km), while they gradually decrease as the distance increases, almost halving at distances of more than 6 km. The same can be said for distance from the nearest village. The plots furthest away cost almost Lit 18 million/haless than those in the immediate vicinity.... Vicinity to a dump has a greater effect than that of poor access. It is clear that being close to dumps almost totally eliminates the building suitability of the land, at least from an urban residential point of view. This allows the effect of the urban land rent on agricultural land in metropolitan areas to be estimated. If the value of a 2 ha plot of land, sited near an industrial or commercial area and with good access, is estimated with model C to be about Lit 77 million/ha, the value of a plot of the same size situated 9km away, near a dump and accessible by a dirt track or across the end of a field, would be about Lit 28 million/ha. 2, record 23, English, - urban%20land%20rent

... a section of a city, primarily a residential area. It usually represents the service area of a high school, contains a business center, and commonly constitutes a section of the city measuring two or three miles across. It can be thought of as a "community of neighborhoods" because it is usually composed of three to five neighborhoods. The above definition describes the "community" as a physical entity and allows us to distinguish it from the "neighborhood unit" for purposes of defining planning areas in a city. Note however that the term also refers to a social reality usually including geographic territory, but more importantly involving people held together by psychological, sociological and/or economic bonds or by a common purpose. In this sense, it is not as closely associated to the idea of geographical proximity as either "neighborhood" or the French "quartier". Even in strict planning terms, "community" is a broader term than "quartier" in that it can also apply to entire cities or towns or, conversely, to small rural settlements. 1, record 27, English, - community

2, record 27, French, - quartier

The GHPC' s specific area of interest is in increasing the use of GeoExchange technology for both commercial and residential heating and cooling. GeoExchange systems use the earth's renewable energy to provide heating in winter, and cooling in summer, with energy consomption 25% to 50% less than traditional oil, natural gas, and electric heat pump systems. Moreover because GeoExchange systems burn no fossil fuels in creating heat, they reduce greenhouse gas emissions substantially, and eliminate a source of carbon monoxide inside the homes and commercial buildings where they’re used. 1, record 28, English, - Geothermal%20Heat%20Pump%20Consortium

10, record 33, French, - ouvrage%20de%20g%C3%A9nie%20civil
