After their 19th century conquest, a modified system of traditional authority was retained in the Reserves, together with communal land ownership and the recognition of African family law.

La substitution récente du mot "Bantoustan", ou Foyer national bantou, à l'expression traditionnelle de "réserve" indique une conception plus nette de l'avenir politique des Africains dans l'État. Cette formule, annoncée comme l'aspect positif de l'apartheid alors que la ségrégation en est l'aspect négatif, repose sur trois idées directrices: nécessité de délimiter les territoires qui seront attribués en exclusivité aux ethnies africaines; nécessité d'assurer leur développement dans le cadre d'une économie principalement agraire; nécessité de les doter d'une infrastructure administrative adaptée pour que les Africains disposent progressivement d'une autonomie réelle mais conforme à leurs traditions.

A way of necessity may be acquired by an implied grant in favour of the grantee of lands over the lands of the grantor when land-locked lands are granted which are physically inaccessible unless the grantee is permitted to use the surrounding land of the grantor as an approach, and similarly a way of necessity may by implication be reserved to the grantor over the lands of the grantee when land-locked lands are retained.(Anger and Honsberger, 2nd ed., 1985, p. 949).

Natural or artificial obstacle used to protect land from the inundation of river or sea water.

Dikes, artificial embankments(technically neither dams nor levees) have been constructed to hold bodies of water, mostly on relatively flat land. A body of water so retained may be in nature of a reservoir, lake, pond, or flooding. Also dikes may be constructed on the shores or borders of a lake... to prevent inflow into a lake of undesirable water.

The term "dam" is usually used for a structure constructed across a watercourse or stream channel, and "dike" for one constructed solely on dry ground.

Canadian command relationship which gives the gaining commander full authority to direct and control all aspects of the operational activities and all movement of the unit or formation placed at his disposal, and, unless specifically excluded, the authority to direct and responsibility for the combat service support of the unit. The commander may assign missions or tasks to the entire unit or to its separate elements. He may delegate all or any part of his authority for the "under command" unit to a subordinate or adjacent commander. In grouping tactical aviation units "under command" of a land commander, the gaining commander will exercise his authority for the assignment of tasks to the separate elements of the force, the delegation of authority to subordinate commanders and the selection of and movement between deployment areas through the aviation component commander. In addition, the control of certain aspects of unit operational or support activities is retained by Commander Air Command and exercised through the aviation component commander.

Dans le cas des unités d'aviation tactique régies par le statut «en sous-ordre» d'un commandant de l'élément terre, le commandant bénéficiaire exerce son autorité par l'entremise du commandant de l'élément aviation dans les sphères suivantes : affectation de tâches aux différents éléments d'une force donnée, délégation de pouvoirs aux commandants subordonnés, choix et mouvements entre les différentes zones de déploiement. De plus, le contrôle de certains aspects des activités opérationnelles ou de soutien d'une unité, revient au commandant du Commandement aérien et est exercé par le commandant de l'élément d'aviation.
