La concurrence binoculaire apparaît lorsque chaque œil capte une image différente dans le même secteur du champ visuel. Les organes visuels de bas niveau, dans la partie gauche du cerveau, reçoivent une stimulation issue des deux yeux, mais ne voient que la partie du champ visuel qui est à droite du point de fixation, tandis que du côté droit, seules parviennent les informations provenant de la moitié gauche du champ visuel.
