Should they be all connected together then the air in the detectors subjected to the fire condition can expand into the other detectors and detection will be sluggish. For this reason, when installation requires a large number of heat detectors in a room or process, they are subdivided through the use of mercury checks. These checks regulate air pressures from different banks of heat detectors.

Cross-zoning requires the activation of two smoke detectors before water is released into the dry pipe system. Much like the Alaska Marine Highway System, a staging area will be used at both ends of the tunnel for vehicles to line up for the next change of direction of travel. Since this is a one way tunnel, vehicles will have to wait their turn to go through the tunnel. In general, only a 15 minute period will be used for cars in one direction and then the direction of travel will be reversed.

Forced Air Wood Furnaces. Central wood-burning furnaces are controlled by a wall mounted thermostat in the living area. Temperature and fan controls are the same as those found on oil and gas furnaces. Unlike room heaters, which produce a steady heat output by periodic manual adjustments of the draft control, most wood furnaces operate in cycles. A cycle starts with the thermostat sensing that heat is needed in the room where it is located. It signals the furnace control system which opens the combustion air damper and a hot fire develops. When the air inside the furnace's sheet metal casing gets hot, a preset fan control starts the circulating blower and the warm air is moved through the ducts to all areas of the house.
