For ordinary noise quieting, the average of absorption coefficients measured at frequencies of 250, 500, 1, 000 and 2, 000 eps, called the noise-reduction coefficient, may be used.... In making quantitative estimates of noise reduction, the total of sound absorption of the room boundaries may be computed by multiplying the noise-reduction coefficient of each different material present by the total exposed area of that material and summing up the resulting products.

Évaluation de la réduction du niveau du bruit. [...] Lorsqu'on ajoute des matériaux absorbants dans une pièce, il n'y a pas de changements dans le champ direct. Il n'y a réduction du niveau des bruits que dans le champ réverbéré. Cette réduction augmente avec le rapport A/Ao des aires d'absorption équivalentes de la salle après et avant traitement. La loi de réduction est une loi logarithmique, comme toutes les lois de l'acoustique. En première approximation, la réduction du niveau de bruit exprimée en décibels est égale à 10 log A/Ao.

Shake, Rattle & Roll Poster.... Rattle :... Even though there are no sounds in the vacuum of space, it is very noisy inside the International Space Station. A lot of the noise comes from the rattling and creaking of fans and events. Student Activity : Acquire a large, clean empty cardboard box(top or bottom removed), big enough to fit easily and comfortably over a person's head, leaving ample room for ventilation. Sit the box on the floor or table, open side down, and tap or scratch lightly on the outside of the box using only your hands. Next, place the box over your head and repeat the procedure. Comment on the loudness of the sounds you hear. Relate this to conditions inside the International Space Station. Student Challenge : Acquire a simple, inexpensive household fan. Develop a method to reduce the amount of noise produced by the fan without reducing the airflow.

Bon nombre de ces bruits viennent des cliquetis et des craquements des ventilateurs et des évents d'aération. Activité de l'élève : Prenez une grande boîte de carton propre et vide (parties supérieure et inférieure enlevées) et dont les dimensions sont suffisamment grandes pour pouvoir y passer la tête et laisser amplement de place pour la ventilation. Placez la boîte sur le plancher ou sur une table, côté ouvert vers le bas, et frappez ou grattez légèrement du bout du doigt la partie extérieure de la boîte. Placez ensuite la boîte sur votre tête et refaites les mêmes bruits. Décrivez l'intensité des sons que vous entendez. Faites enfin le lien entre l'expérience que vous venez d'effectuer et les conditions qui règnent à l'intérieur de la Station spatiale internationale. Défi : Utilisez un simple petit ventilateur maison peu coûteux. Trouvez une méthode qui permettra de réduire le bruit produit par le ventilateur sans pour autant diminuer le débit d'air.

The conventional method of specifying the noise level in a room is the NC(Noise Criteria) curve. Introduced in 1957 B. D.(before disco) by Leo Beranek, the data on which the NC curves were based was gathered from surveys of office workers on the effects of environmental noise on their ability to perform their work and to communicate speech. The curves were developed for the purpose of providing criteria for reducing complaints to tolerable levels.

Room Acoustics. Acoustics is usually very broadly defined as "the science of sound. "The term "Room Acoustics" can be more narrowly defined as the shaping and equipping of an enclosed space to obtain the best possible conditions for faithful hearing of wanted sound and the direction and the reduction of unwanted sound.... Reverberation is a basic acoustic property of a room. It can enrich speech and music in all areas--or it can slur speech and generate higher noise levels throughout a room, depending upon the room volume, timing, and absorption.
