Smooth rounded form of various types cut into bedrock by the combined erosive power of ice, meltwater and subglacial sediment under high pressure.

CONT

Three main hypotheses have been proposed to explain the genesis of p-forms and include; formation under debris rich basal ice ..., formation by subglacial meltwater erosion ..., and through abrasion by saturated till ... Given uncertainties regarding the origin of p-forms, several authors have suggested that the term p-form too strongly infers an origin by plastically deforming ice or till, and have introduced the term sculpted form or s-form ... in its place. However, the term s-form has itself come to infer a meltwater origin for these features ...

Round/Globular... this type of plant material form has a distinct rounded or spherical shape. European beech(Fagus sylvatica), silver linden(Tilia tomentosa), Japanese maple(Acer palmatum), Cornelian cherry dogwood(Cornus mas), and Indian laurel fig(Ficus microcarpa) are all examples of globular plant form. Rounded plant forms are one of the most numerous types of plant forms and therefore typically constitute the majority of plants used in a design composition... rounded plants are nondirectional and neutral in their ability to lead the eye. Therefore globular plants can be easily used to give a design unity by their repetition throughout the composition. They can serve as the neutral, soft plant form against which the other more striking forms are opposed.

A small oval shining black flea beetle (Epitrix cucumeris) that injures the leaves of various plants.

CONT

The potato flea beetle is primarily a pest of potato but it also attacks cucumber, eggplant, pepper, tomato and such other plants as jimsonweed, tobacco, large white petunia, groundcherry and bittersweet... Feeding injury, whether by adults on potato leaves in spring or late summer, or by larvae on tubers and roots and transmission of plant pathogens, are all potential ways in which this flea beetle may reduce potato yields both in terms of quality and quantity. Adult feeding on leaves results in rounded feeding scars, 0. 1 to 5 mm in diameter, which usually penetrate through the leaf to form a hole.

DEF

A metamorphic process occurring in a dry snowpack with a weak temperature gradient where branched and angular snow crystals decompose into rounded shapes.

CONT

The rounding process builds rounded grains (rounds) which bond well to one another creating a snowpack (or layer) that is generally increasingly strong.

CONT

The following conditions promote rounding: - A weak temperature gradient generally less than 1 degree C per 10 cm (which moves water vapour slowly from warm areas to cold). - Dense, tightly packed snow. - Small grains (which produce denser snow). - A high snow temperature, typically above -10 degrees C (which promotes weaker temperature gradients).

CONT

As the temperatures penetrate the snowpack, it will promote rounding. [Example approved by the Avalanche Bulletin Terminology Standardization Committee.]

OBS

equilibrium growth: This metamorphic process has always been believed to be driven by radius dependent vapor pressure gradients, but this is currently under investigation and is being re-thought by scientists.

OBS

In older popular literature originating mostly from the United States, the term "equitemperature metamorphism" has been used to describe the process of generating rounded forms... Since temperature gradients largely determine the rate of growth(even in wet snow), and therefore the form,... and since "equitemperature" conditions are nearly impossible to have in dry alpine snow, [this] term is not recommended [and was replaced in the late 1980 by rounding].

OBS

Snow crystal formed during the equitemperature metamorphism process.

CONT

Rounded Grains are those in which the original form is no longer discernible and the crystal takes on a generally rounded amorphous appearance. Rounded grains typically tend to be smaller grains and are usually significantly smaller than the original grain from which they formed. Typical grain size is often less than 1 mm. Commonly referred to as "rounds" these grains tend to be found in harder or stronger snowpack layers. Rounded grains typically form when there is a weak temperature gradient in the snowpack(<1 degree/10 cm). This weak temperature gradient occurs most often in areas where the snowpack is deep and temperatures are mild.

CONT

The unified thread form accompanied by the unified thread standards has in the past fulfilled the necessary requirements for interchangeability of threaded products between the United States, Great Britain, and Canada. This modified thread form represented two compromises between British Whitworth and United Stated National thread forms. The British accepted the 60° thread angle of the American thread, and the Americans accepted a rounded root and crest similar to the Whitworth form. The United States National unified form for external threads has a rounded root and may have either a rounded or flat crest. The unified thread contours provide advantages over both the earlier forms.... The unified thread is a general-purpose thread that is particularly suited for fasteners.

CONT

Unified and American National screw thread standards ... consist of six series of threads and a selection of special threads that cover nonstandard combinations of diameter and pitch. In general, the unified screw threads are limited to three series; coarse (UNC), fine (UNF), and extrafine (UNEF).

OBS

Under the unified system, threads are specified by giving in order the nominal diameter, number of threads per inch, the initial letters such as UNC or UNF that identify the series, and class of thread (IA, 2A, and 3A or 1B, 2B and 3B). ... the specification for a left-hand thread must have the letters LH included.

OBS

See also "8UN", "12UN", and "16UN", which designate the 8-, 12-, and 16-thread series.

Test for Special Form Radioactive Material.... Percussion test. The material is placed on a lead sheet which is supported by a smooth essentially unyielding surface and struck by the flat face of a steel billet so as to produce an impact equivalent to that resulting from a free fall of 1. 4 kg through 1 m. The flat face of the billet is 25 mm in diameter with the edges rounded off to a radius of 3 mm. The lead, of hardness number 3. 5 to 4. 5 on the Vickers scale and not more than 25 mm thick, covers an area greater than that covered by the material. A fresh surface of lead is used for each impact. The billet strikes the material so as to cause maximum damage.
