ROUNDED GRAIN [6 records]

Record 1 2011-07-05

English

Subject field(s)
  • Scientific Instruments
  • Destructive and Non-destructive Tests (Mat.)
  • Wood Industries
DEF

An apparatus used for making hardness tests on timber.

CONT

Hardness.... With the change to SI units a special hardened steel tool(known as the Janka hardness tool) rounded to a diameter of 11. 3 mm(projected area 100 mm2) is embedded to one-half of its diameter into the(20 mm) test piece. This tool has a device embodying an electrical contact which rings a signal bell when the correct depth of penetration has been reached... The hardness test is performed... on the static bending specimen... there is a very good correlation between the side hardness of timber, as determined by the Janka hardness tool, and its compression strength perpendicular to the grain.

Record 2 2009-05-07

English

Subject field(s)
  • Geology
DEF

A roundness grade in which considerable wear is shown.

CONT

Arenaceous rocks in which the particle shape is angular to sub-angular are termed grits, while the remainder, with rounded to sub-rounded grains, are termed sandstones.

OBS

[In this grade type] edges and corners are rounded to smooth curves, and the area of the original faces is considerably reduced, but the original shape of the grain is still distinct.

OBS

subrounded: term used at Natural Resources Canada - Earth Sciences Sector.

Domaine(s)
  • Géologie
CONT

Record 3 2008-09-23

English

Subject field(s)
  • Atmospheric, Climatic and Meteorological Phenomena
DEF

Snow crystal formed during the equitemperature metamorphism process.

CONT

Rounded Grains are those in which the original form is no longer discernible and the crystal takes on a generally rounded amorphous appearance. Rounded grains typically tend to be smaller grains and are usually significantly smaller than the original grain from which they formed. Typical grain size is often less than 1 mm. Commonly referred to as "rounds" these grains tend to be found in harder or stronger snowpack layers. Rounded grains typically form when there is a weak temperature gradient in the snowpack(<1 degree/10 cm). This weak temperature gradient occurs most often in areas where the snowpack is deep and temperatures are mild.

CONT

There is a strong layer of rounds at the base of the snowpack. [Example approved by the Avalanche Bulletin Terminology Standardization Committee.]

OBS

rounded grain; round : terms officially approved by the Avalanche Bulletin Terminology Standardization Committee.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Phénomènes météorologiques, climatiques et atmosphériques
DEF
