Lambda switching(sometimes called photonic switching, or wavelength switching) is the technology used in optical networking to switch individual wavelengths of light onto separate paths for specific routing of information. In conjunction with technologies such as dense wavelength division multiplexing(DWDM)-which enables 80 or more separate light wavelengths to be transmitted on a single optical fiber-lambda switching enables a light path to behave like a virtual circuit.

Very fast algorithm-execution speed and quick interrupt-response time are crucial to high-speed data switching and routing. In Cisco's 7200 and 7500 series, routers use the R4700 to achieve 700-Mbyte/s bus bandwidth for manipulating packet headers and making quick routing decisions. The 7200/150 series router, for example, can switch 140, 000 packets/s.

Network designers could combine optical logic and demultiplexing to build a rudimentary communications switch. The logic devices would determine whether some of the data should be unloaded from the incoming signal by reading the address of a packet-and, if so, the demultiplexer would switch the desired data to one of several output fibers for routing to the appropriate computer or subnetwork.
