Subject field(s)
  • Statistical Methods
CONT

A one-sample t test compares the mean score of a sample on a continuous dependent variable to a known value, which is usually the population mean. For example, say that we take a sample of students from the university and compare their average IQ [intelligence quotient] to a known average IQ for the university. If we want to find out whether the sample mean IQ differs from the average university IQ, a one-sample t-test will give us the answer.

Response to Morpholine - Route: Eye - Species: Rabbit - Dose: 0.1 ml undiluted - Irritation score = 67.7/110.

OBS

Numerical scoring system developed by Friedenwald, Hughes and Herrmann for the evaluation of primary irritants using the rabbit's eye(for the toxicologic appraisal of a given compound). Table 6 : Scale of weighted scores for grading the severity of ocular lesions : I. Cornea : A. Opacity... B. Area involved.... Total maximum score=80. II. Iris :... Total possible maximum=10. III. Conjunctivae :... Total maximum=20. The maximum total score(110) is the sum of all scores obtained for the cornea, iris and conjunctivae. NB : A test score may result in a fraction [as shown in the above example 67. 7/110] because of the fact that it represents the average of all the animals in the test group.

OBS

The above context was taken from an article by Draize et. al. in the December 1984 issue of the Journal of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics, which is the basis for the cited irritation score. This article along with supplementary explanations on this concept were given to us by Evan D. Riehl, M.D., Medical Consultant at E.I. Du Pont de Nemours and Company, Newark, Delaware, USA.

DEF

CONT

Passing score. If it is appropriate for the context of the test, there will be a passing score. There are no convincing arguments for any one cutoff score; rather, the content, context, and type of student will determine the passing level. It will also depend on your intentions for the test. A mastery test will require a very high pass mark, while an ordinary quiz or classroom test is likely to be less stringent. Sometimes a test may have no passing grade at all, as when its intention is to locate areas of weakness rather than to categorize or grade students.

There is another development that has recently appeared in a few tests that is important for the future development of test batteries. This is the appearance of absolute scales. An absolute scale is one that covers the entire range of a function, from zero(theoretically) to the full adult range. Zero is often unattainable in psychological scores; so the bottom of a scale is the lowest score for which a reliable score can be obtained. In practice such tests have an extended range from a below-average IQ of a young child to a superior adult IQ. In many areas, such as memory or tapping speed, a zero is obtainable.

CONT

Warner-Bratzler (WB) shear scores were related to the number of chews. Consumers preferred those steaks rated more tender by WB score. TG tenderometer (a machine which mechanically measures the amount of work required to masticate a core of meat) values were related to consumer preference but not as closely as WB results. Internal consistency.... Sometimes an adaptation of the contrasted group method is used, extreme groups being selected on the basis of the total test score. The performance of the upper criterion group on each test item is then compared with that of the lower criterion group. Items that fail to show a significantly greater proportion of "passes" in the upper than in the lower criterion group are considered invalid... Another application of the criterion of internal consistency involves the correlation of subtest scores with total score.

Consistance interne.

The coefficient of equivalence tells how well the test score agrees with other equivalent measures made at the same time. It is obtained by giving two forms... [of a test] in close succession.
