English

Subject field(s)
  • Astronomy
  • Planets
  • The Moon (Astronomy)
DEF

A bright upland or mountainous region on the surface of the Moon, characterized by a lighter color than that of a "mare", by relatively high albedo, and by a rough texture formed by large intersecting or overlapping craters. It may represent a remnant of an ancient lunar surface, sculptured largely by impact of meteorites; it may also be attributed to igneous and volcanic activity from within the Moon.

CONT

English

Subject field(s)
  • Mathematical Geography
  • Geomorphology and Geomorphogeny
  • Erosion and Weathering (Geol.)
OBS

The calcareous deposits that crop out in circular pattern around the Adrar des Iforas present a cuesta landscape; the structural limestone surfaces of the Danian and Ypresian beds crop out as wide plateaus bordered by abrupt cliffs. The surface of these plateaus is sculptured by erosion into a kind of lapies, which was called "Terrecht"(stone sponge) in the Tamashek language.

  • Géomorphologie et géomorphogénie
  • Érosion et corrosion (Géologie)
OBS
