There are probably dozens of Box Canyons in California; this one is a colourful ravine through the Mecca Hills at the east end of the Coachella Valley in the southeast of the state, 40 miles from Palm Springs. The sides are formed by upturned strata-twisted, buckled and eroded, they stretch for about 8 miles along the canyon, which is part of a metamorphic zone associated with the nearby San Andreas Fault. This runs through the Coachella Valley then southeast past the Salton Sea and affects the geology of a wide strip of land at either side. 1, record 2, English, - box%20canyon

Hard rock from the sea floor is difficult to recover. The customary method is to tow a dredge, a heavy iron box or pipe, along the bottom in hope of breaking off fragments(...) One end of the dredge is closed with chain mesh or an iron grill to trap solid fragments while permitting water and soft sediment to wash through; the other is open, attached by a chain bridle to a cable from the ship. 2, record 3, English, - geological%20dredge
