Well-defined, wave-like structures in the underside of the cloud; more chaotic and with less horizontal organization than the variety undulatus. Asperitas is characterized by localized waves in the cloud base, either smooth or dappled with smaller features, sometimes descending into sharp points, as if viewing a roughened sea surface from below. Varying levels of illumination and thickness of the cloud can lead to dramatic visual effects. Occurs mostly with Stratocumulus and Altocumulus. 1, record 3, English, - Asperitas

Microorganisms in the surface layers of the ocean are known to produce dimethylsulfide, DMS, which escapes into the atmosphere. DMS in the air leads to the production of particles that act as seeds, or nuclei, for cloud droplets to form. More solar energy means more DMS, which means more cloud cover and less solar energy reaching the sea--a stabilizing, negative feedback, just the opposite of the kind of runaway positive feedback envisaged in Mahlman's scary scenario. 10, record 7, English, - %28methylsulfanyl%29methane

4, record 20, French, - altitude%20des%20nuages

A picture derived from a portion of the thermal radiation spectrum emitted from Earth and cloud surfaces (typically, from wavelengths of approximately 8 to 12 mm, the water vapour "window"). 3, record 21, English, - infrared%20image

Satellite image.... The most common is the infrared image which indicates the temperature of the cloud tops(or the land or sea in cloud free areas). Visible images are also used, but are only useful during daylight hours. Infrared images are most commonly used as they can be taken through night-time hours. 4, record 21, English, - infrared%20image
Record number: 21, Textual support number: 2 CONT
These images come from satellites which remain above a fixed point on the Earth (ie. they are "geostationary"). The infrared picture shows the same view but looking at a part of the spectrum which our eyes do not detect. The infrared pictures allow us to measure the temperature of the cloud tops, which can be used to determine their height. The whiter clouds are colder than the greyer clouds in this image. Infrared images can be recorded 24 hours a day. Visible pictures can only be made during daylight hours. 5, record 21, English, - infrared%20image

for continued condensation leading to the formation of cloud droplets, the air must be slightly supersaturated. Among the highly efficient condensation nuclei are the salt particles produced by the evaporation of sea spray, but it now appears that particles produced by man-made fires and by natural combustion(for example, forest fires) also make a major contribution. 1, record 22, English, - salt%20particle

2, record 22, French, - particule%20de%20sel
