DEF

A research design in which the subjects receive, in sequence, the experimental intervention (or the control intervention), then, after a specified time, (phase without intervention), the control intervention (or the experimental intervention).

OBS

In this design, each subject serves as his/her own control, and randomisation may be used to determine the order in which a subject receives the experimental intervention and the control intervention.

OBS

For example, in a study comparing two medications, all participants would receive each medication in sequence(usually in a random order). Advantages of this design over between-groups design include fewer participants and reduction of error due to individual differences. A disadvantage is the possibility of carryover effects from one treatment to the next.

DEF

Record 4 2015-01-14

English

Subject field(s)
  • Nervous System
CONT

Neuroscientists need more efficient and less intrusive ways to observe brain circuits, in which electrical signals pass from one neuron to the next.... A radically new approach—a molecular ticker tape—would, in one scenario, place a single strand of DNA with a known sequence of letters, or nucleotides, inside a cell but near its surface. An enzyme, DNA polymerase, would then add new nucleotides that bind to form a double-stranded molecule... When a neuron fires, an influx of calcium ions coming through a newly opened membrane channel would cause the enzyme to add the wrong nucleotides..., an error that could be detected when the DNA strand is later sequenced.

CONT

Subject field(s)
  • Nuclear Plant Safety
CONT

An accident sequence is taken to mean a series of events resulting from one or more initiating events(the failure of one or more components or functions, or human error) and which put the facility into a degraded situation with the possibility of radiological consequences, despite the engineered safety systems and mitigation devices installed in it. Safety analyses are performed to study these sequences and the counter-measures to be taken, mainly by using a standard incident and accident list taken into consideration at the facility design stage.

In an ICAI [intelligent computer-aided instruction] program the tutoring rules that an author uses... are defined in the knowledge base, and the program generates the instructional sequence in response to student questions or mistakes.... Another approach(to supply the reference signal to the adaptation mechanism) spreads the adaptation process over the operating time of the adaptive equalizer by sending pulses in a quasi-random pattern along with the data sequence. CONT

The representation of a general pulse transmission system is given in Figure 8. 1. Here, the information input to the system is encoded in some sense.... This encoded signal drives the modulator, which maps the pulse sequence into an analog wave suitable for transmission over the channel.... At the receiving end, the demodulator maps the received analog waveform into a pulse sequence that is a "best guess" of the sequence transmitted. The decoder operates on the binary sequence to extract the information originally impressed on the encoder. The overall objective is to transfer the information from the input to the output within some a priori specified low error rate, where the error rate is the average number of disagreements per unit of time between the inputs and the outputs.

CONT

The only duty of the concept teaching program is to select the small sets to be presented at each iteration from a pool of prestored classified instances. Its objective is to find the sequence that will minimize the time elapsed between the presentation of the first instances and the last error in classification. To this end, it maintains a model of the student's set of hypotheses(exactly how the model is inferred is left unspecified). In addition to a definition of the(target concept), it is given a model of its student's learning mechanisms. Hence it can select the instances by which its learning model would minimize the difference between its student model' s set of hypotheses and the correct concept. This difference must be computed according to some distance measure, which can be very difficult to determine.
