Oil furnace operations have not changed very much. On a call for heat from the thermostat, the burner motor will start. Oil is now pumped to the nozzle, and the ignition transformer is energized. The nozzle is designed to spray the oil into the fire tube as a fine mist. The ignition transformer is designed to create an electrical arc across the electrodes. As the oil mist (also mixed with air) comes in contact with the arc, ignition takes place, and the fire is started.

Burner controller : The controller is usually located in front of the burner. On a call for heat the controller starts a sequence of events that ensure safe operation before the burner is allowed to start. The controller continues to monitor burner operation while the boiler is running. If for any reason the controller senses an unsafe operating condition it will shut the burner off. Pushing the manual reset on the controller will often restart the boiler.

The fault tree technique, a favorite tool of AECB staff members, is a means of finding out what combinations of component and system failures would cause an event in the first place. It provides a systematic method of checking that the systems being relied on to prevent something worse happening won’t be knocked out by the event itself.

Pour déterminer quels éléments pourraient être défectueux, on utilise notamment la technique dite «arbre d'événements et arbre de défaillances». Utiliser cette méthode, c'est un peu comme suivre des dominos alignés suivant un parcours à plusieurs embranchements. On établit ainsi les événements qui pourraient se produire après l'événement initial et on trace des plans d'action linéaires (parfois très longs) et leurs répercussions en cascade. L'arbre de défaillance est l'instrument préféré des spécialistes de la CCEA, car il leur permet de déterminer les combinaisons de défaillances des composants et des systèmes qui pourraient être à l'origine d'un événement. C'est là une façon rigoureuse de s'assurer que le système mis en place pour empêcher des conséquences plus graves ne sera pas neutralisé par l'événement lui-même.
