Subject field(s)
  • Diagnostic Procedures (Medicine)
  • Immunology

CONT

For proteins from sources not known to be allergenic, and which do not exhibit sequence homology to a known allergen, targeted serum screening may be considered.

CONT

In targeted serum screening, human blood serum is obtained from individuals who are allergic to materials that are broadly related to the source of the gene.

CONT

DEF

The sequential correspondence of nucleotide triplets in a nucleic acid molecule which permits nucleic acid hybridization.

Record 3 2013-11-15

English

Subject field(s)
  • Genetics
DEF

Recombination between specific pairs of sequences. It is responsible for the integration of phage genomes into the bacterial chromosome. The recombination event involves a specific sequence of the phage DNA and a specific sequence of the bacterial DNA. Within these sequences, there is only a short stretch of homology, necessary for the recombination event, but not sufficient for it. The enzymes involved in this event cannot recombine other pairs of(homologous or nonhomologous) sequences, but act only on the particular pair of phage and bacterial sequences.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Génétique
DEF

Record 4 2013-07-15

English

Subject field(s)
  • Data Banks and Databases
DEF

A collection of computer files containing the operational data of an organization.

CONT

In the absence of a suitable crystal structure, computer methods must predict protein conformation from sequence. The most powerful approaches for structure prediction are based on sequence homology or a more general analogy with known crystal structures. Improvements in these methods will require access to data bases containing the basic motifs of protein architecture... The database will also enable us to extract and store tertiary motifs... These motifs can then be slotted into a model-building study when, for example, predicting the conformation of an homologous protein.

OBS

The system includes not only the stored information but also the data sublanguage (DSL), a group of subroutines used to retrieve, update, insert, and delete information; and the administrator, the person responsible for the integrity of the data and programs.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Banques et bases de données
DEF

English

Subject field(s)
  • Genetics
DEF

The site on messenger RNA at which ribosomes initiate protein synthesis.

OBS

Very little sequence homology exists between the binding sites of different bacterial mRNAs. In fact, the only common feature is the presence of a short sequence that is complementary to part of the region close to the 3’ end of the 16S rRNA. This polypurine stretch is often known as the Shine-Dalgarno sequence.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Génétique
DEF

DEF

Zinc metalloendoproteases are widely involved in the intracellular processing and degradation of proteins. Vallee and Auld showed that these enzymes isolated from bacteria of Bacillus species share the consensus amino acid sequence, HEXXH, in their active sites and that the two histidine residues in the sequence ligate the catalytic zinc ion(1, 2). According to the sequence homology, Jiang and Bond grouped known 40 amino acid sequences of zinc endoproteases into five distinct subfamilies(astacin, serratia, matrixin, snake venom, and thermolysin).

Subject field(s)
  • Biological Sciences
CONT

Optimal application of protein engineering technology will require understanding how the amino acid sequence of a polypeptide chain specifies its spatial conformation. It is now clear that polypeptide chain folding and subunit assembly proceeds through sequential pathways involving defined intermediates. The critical amino acid instructions directing these pathways appear to be dispersed through the sequence... Very similar patterns of chain folding and domain structure can arise from different amino acid sequences that show little or no homology. The immunoglobulins are a prime example of conservation of structure despite extensive differences in amino acid sequence.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Sciences biologiques
CONT

Human endozepine, an 86 amino acid polypeptide, was originally isolated from human brain tissue as a putative ligand of the benzodiazepine receptor. Complete amino acid sequencing of the human and bovine proteins revealed significant homology with the partial sequence of diazepam binding inhibitor(DBI), a protein from rat brain. Both endozepine and DBI have been shown to elicit behavioral effects, suggesting that they function as pharmacologically-active ligands of the GABA.
