In mid-continent North America during January and February, the following weather sequence is common. There is an increasing evening cloudiness with rising temperatures and a falling barometer. In the middle of the night, rain begins and continues through mid-morning on the next day. The rain then changes to snow, which accumulates to a depth of several inches by evening. Barometric pressure is rising and the snowfall tapers off and stops before midnight. The temperature falls during the night. 2, record 2, English, - weather%20sequence

C'est sans doute vrai dans certains cas; il n'en reste pas moins que si l'animation algorithmique est conçue de manière efficace et utilisée convenablement en plus d'autres méthodes, elle peut tout à fait faciliter l'apprentissage. 4, record 4, French, - animation%20algorithmique

Neuroscientists need more efficient and less intrusive ways to observe brain circuits, in which electrical signals pass from one neuron to the next.... A radically new approach—a molecular ticker tape—would, in one scenario, place a single strand of DNA with a known sequence of letters, or nucleotides, inside a cell but near its surface. An enzyme, DNA polymerase, would then add new nucleotides that bind to form a double-stranded molecule... When a neuron fires, an influx of calcium ions coming through a newly opened membrane channel would cause the enzyme to add the wrong nucleotides..., an error that could be detected when the DNA strand is later sequenced. 1, record 19, English, - molecular%20ticker%20tape

The(Russian) continuous method is an adaptation of the tank method. It was developed in the USSR [Union of Soviet Socialist Republics] and includes a sequence of connected pressurized tanks. Base wine is pumped into the first tank. Measured amounts of the "liqueur de tirage"(solution with yeast and sugar) are added for the secondary fermentation. Then the wine passes through additional tanks containing wood shavings or chips. When the wine reaches the final tanks of the series, it is clarified and any remaining sediment removed. Optimal application of protein engineering technology will require understanding how the amino acid sequence of a polypeptide chain specifies its spatial conformation. It is now clear that polypeptide chain folding and subunit assembly proceeds through sequential pathways involving defined intermediates. The critical amino acid instructions directing these pathways appear to be dispersed through the sequence... Very similar patterns of chain folding and domain structure can arise from different amino acid sequences that show little or no homology. The immunoglobulins are a prime example of conservation of structure despite extensive differences in amino acid sequence. 3, record 29, English, - chain%20folding

Since alleles derived from different parental origins that are identical in nucleotide sequence may exhibit imprinting, the differences between the paternal and maternal genetic material are due to differential programming during spermatogenesis or oogenesis. The different packaging constraints of the sperm cell compared with the ovum also may be important. The regulatory mechanisms superimpose on the nucleotide sequence of a gene to determine the location, timing and degree of expression, and are termed epigenetic effects. Epigenetic modification(rather than genetic divergence of the gametes) of the DNA is likely to be the signal that marks the sperm and egg alleles as different. Imprinting is a special type of epigenetic inheritance that is passed through the gene line into somatic tissues of the progeny and is parent-specific. 1, record 32, English, - epigenetic%20modification

Three families of repetitive sequences have been studied in most detail, including the 35-40 bp [base pair] repetitive extragenic palindromic(REP) sequence, the 124-127 bp enterobacterial repetitive intergenic consensus(ERIC) sequence, and the 154 bp BOX element. These sequences appear to be located in distinct, intergenic positions all around the chromosome. The repetitive elements may be present in both orientations on the chromosome, and PCR [polymerase chain reaction] primers have been designed to "read outward" from the inverted repeats in REP and ERIC, and from the boxA subunit of BOX. The use of the above primer(s) and PCR leads to the selective amplification of distinct genomic regions located between REP, ERIC or BOX sequences. The corresponding protocols are referred to as REP-PCR, ERIC-PCR and BOX-PCR, respectively, and rep-PCR collectively. Amplified bands are size fractionated through a gel matrix to yield fingerprint patterns resembling "bar codes", analogous to UPC codes used in grocery stores, and function as a signature for specific bacterial strains. 3, record 36, English, - BOX%2DPCR

Kinesin is a dimeric motor protein that can move for several micrometers along a microtubule without dissociating. The two kinesin motor domains are thought to move processively by operating in a hand-over-hand manner, although the mechanism of such cooperativity is unknown. Recently, a ~50-amino acid region adjacent to the globular motor domain(termed the neck) has been shown to be sufficient for conferring dimerization and processive movement. Based upon its amino acid sequence, the neck is proposed to dimerize through a coiled-coil interaction. To determine the accuracy of this prediction and to investigate the possible function of the neck region in motor activity, we have prepared a serie of synthetic peptides corresponding to different regions of the human kinesin neck and analyzed each peptide for its respective secondary content and stability. 2, record 44, English, - synthetic%20peptide

2, record 44, French, - peptide%20synth%C3%A9tique

The second stage in the process of phtosynthesis is called the Calvin Cycle (it is also called the Calvin-Benson Cycle or the Carbon Fixation Cycle). In the Calvin Cycle, carbon molecules from carbon dioxide, CO2, are fixed into the sugar glucose, (C6H12O2) (in six repeats of the cycle). The Calvin Cycle takes place in the stroma of eucaryotic chloroplasts. The major enzyme that mediates the Calvin Cycle is Rubisco (ribulose-1-5-biphosphate carboxylase). The Calvin Cycle was first investigated in the late 1940s and early 1950s by the Nobel Prize winning chemist Melvin Calvin (1911-1997). 6, record 50, English, - Calvin%20cycle

All photosynthetic plants take carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and convert it, through a complicated sequence of chemical reactions, into starches and sugars. In C3 plants all the cells in the mesophyll of a leaf conduct photosynthesis by the same process, a sequence of reactions called the Calvin cycle. Early in the cycle, atmospheric carbon dioxide is incorporated, or fixed, into a compound containing three carbon atoms. 8, record 50, English, - Calvin%20cycle

(ESWL) works in something like a high-tech Ribe Goldberg sequence. The patient, usually anesthetized from the waist down to obliterate the mild discomfort of the shocks, is strapped onto a pallet and lowered into a specially designed tub full of water. X-rays reveal the precise location of the kidney stone on two television monitors. The physician pushes a button, and a spark plug at the bottom of the tank fires, vaporizing some of the water, which then creates a pressure wave. After bouncing off an elliptical brass reflector that is aimed at the patient's kidney stone, the wave passes harmlessly through the patient's tissues but creates a shattering impact when it collides with the hard stone. More than a thousand individual shocks may be required to completely break up a stone, which will wash away in the patient's urine after it disintegrates. 6, record 61, English, - extracorporeal%20shock%20wave%20lithotripter

Multistage bleaching performed in one or two towers. Pulp is pushed through a tower in plug flow; chemicals and wash water are injected to treat the pulp, displace out the solutions of the previous stages and, in turn, are displaced out of the pulp by subsequent stages. This form of bleaching has the advantages of rapid reaction rates, savings in heat and power, and the reduction of the number of towers required for a bleaching sequence. Les avantages de ce système sont des économies de vapeur et d'énergie, des temps de séjour plus courts, et la possibilité d'effectuer un blanchiment à plusieurs stades dans une seule tour. Farcasiu had already developed SESC (sequential elution by solvents-chromatography) for separating coal fluids into distinct chemical classes. The method seemed even better suited for the separation of biomass oils which, unlike coal products, have no nitrogenous fraction to deal with.... 1, record 75, English, - sequential%20elution%20by%20solvents%2Dchromatography

The original SESC technique required only slight modification for the purpose at hand. Since wood oil is virtually devoid of aliphatic hydrocarbons, the first step, elution with hexane, was omitted. Whatever amount of this fraction, F1, does exist is eluted along with the aromatic hydrocarbons by 15% benzene-hexane in the present technique. This hydrocarbon fraction is designated F1,2. Also, we have found acetic acid to be superior to pyridine for removing the last wood oil residues from the column. 1, record 75, English, - sequential%20elution%20by%20solvents%2Dchromatography

Instruction has goals. In general, goals can be achieved either through intentional planning activities, by which one gains control over the environment, or through the recognition of opportunities presented by the environment's resources. Most of the time, goals are best achieved by an appropriate combination of both styles. Hence, in attaining teaching goals and in generating subgoals, opportunistic and plan-based contexts define a range of pedagogical styles that vary in the system's control over the shape of the tutorial sequence. In turn, the degree of this control determines different triggering contexts for didactic operations and suggests different roles for diagnosis and didactics. 2, record 78, English, - pedagogical%20context

Self's vision of formalizing teaching in terms of a student model is given a sharp focus in his work on concept teaching(Self, 1977). It differs from other projects by being a formal experiment on teaching rather than a teaching system. The domain is the acquisition of simple conjunctive concepts in a relational language close to first-order logic. An example of the concepts taught by Self's system would be R(x) T(y)("There is a rectangle and no triangle"). The target concept is taught through successive variable-free examples classified as positive or negative instances. For example, the tutor could say that R(a) T(b)("There is a rectangle a and a triangle b") is a negative example. Since the order in which the sequence of instances is presented greatly influences the time the student takes to converge on the correct concept, the idea is for the teacher to use a learning model to optimize its selection of examples. 1, record 81, English, - concept%20teaching
